  • 1.  Help loading .GHO from the bootable Ghost USB key. WinPE

Imaging from our image directory on the server is no longer an option so I need to add the GHO / GHS's to the USB itself.

Problem is when I get into the Ghost environment via WinPE I can't find them in the directory. It seems to be a different directory than what I actually see on the USB key when I copied the GHO over. I'm not sure where it's creating the direcotry tree from but I'll try and answer any questions if this all sounds odd.

    Some deets:

    64GB USB

Ghost image created using Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard 2.5.1

    WinPE

I've tried both FAT and NFTS

    Client Details:
    Client:    Symantec Ghost
Destination:    PNY USB 2.0 FD 1100

    Configuration Files:
    START.BAT:
    set path=%path%;x:\ghost

    x:
    cd \ghost
rem --- This will create primary OS drive configuration ---
    ghost32.exe /setosdrives /blind >> x:\ghost\startlog.txt
    start ghost32.exe

I've searched the entire directory and tried placing the GHO / GHS files in multiple locations. Nothing seems to be working.

I have deadlines to meet. Help is VERY much appreciated.

It depends on whether the Ghost files are within the WIM file of WinPE or are stored separately on the USB stick.

WinPE runs entirely from memory, effectively mounting the WIM file as a command line version of windows, usually on the X: drive.

However, the USB stick remains on the original drive letter is was mounted on, somewhere in area of C: to F:

If the files are on the stick outside the WIM file then you will find them on the stick by searching for which drive letter is it mounted on and then going from there.

Which I do get two different devices that both seem to be different directories on the USB however when I go to the F: (I'm assuming outside of WIM) I am unable to find the GHO file. Is there anywhere specific I need to put them?

Edit: When I launch ghost32 on my Win10 unit that I used to create the USB I am able to see the GHO files in the root directory. just not when I go to boot to the USB on the target PC. Possible BIOS issue?

What I would recommend if you are using GSS 2.5 is to make your boot USB device and format it as NTFS, but do not add the image through the Boot Wizard. Instead, create the boot device, then copy them to the device, either at the root or a new folder.

If you are using GSS 3.x to deploy the image, here are the steps:

Ghost will create a single large GHO file ONLY on a local hard disk formatted as NTFS. On any network share or FATxx formatted device, the GHO/GHS files will be limited to 2Gb per file due to file system limitations. (Ghost 2.5 cannot check the file system type on a network share so has to assume worst case).  By formatting your USB key as NTFS you can use a single large GHO file as your image.  Just bear in mind that since NTFS is a journaling file system, it will be reading and writing to your USB key all the time it is inserted, and this can exhaust the available read/write cycles on the key, especially on the cheap ones, if left in.
