    Posted Jan 27, 2011 10:58 AM

In one of the client computers I tried to install Norton Endpoint Protection 11, which is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1, after installation & reboot, the Endpoint Protection icon would not appear in the notification area. Further, in the system settings for client managment, the option to enable icon in notification area is greyed out and that the pulldown menu for location options is entirely blank (there is no option to even choose "default").

This installation errors still occured, even after multiple reinstalled. The program is being installed as an unmanged client. This computer has previously installed Norton Internet Security, which obviously has been uninstalled prior to installation of Endpoint Protection.

I have already tried previous suggested solution of editing regedit of the client computer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC and checked that TrayIconDefault is already 1.

Can someone tell me why this is happening?

You may need to run the Norton Removal Tool to clear out any remnants of NIS.

What version of SEP are you running?

    I am running 11.05.

May I ask why running the tool to clear out the remnants will make a difference? I like to know how likely this will resolve the problem before executing it.

    Thanks.

I don't know for sure, but whenever I need to remove Norton, I have always used the tool provided by Symantec.

You should also consider upgrading to RU6 MP2, there have been many fixes with the product since RU5.

For future reference, can I use this tool to "directly" remove prior Norton product installation WITHOUT first uninstalling using the traditional install from the Windows Vista Control Panel's Program Manager?

We have another mission critical computer that is failling under the same scenario.

are u physically on the box or using remote desktop?

icon does not display if u r in RDP session. Use console session instead

    start

    run

    mstsc  /console,

do a repair of SEP from add/remove programs, u should see the icon.

There is no need to do the traditional uninstall when running the Norton Removal Tool.

To Rafeeq, I am local. The client is installed as unmanaged, unlike the others. It is a mission critical client machine that does not connect to the network as a rule (only for certain key management issues).

I have already tried doing a so-called repair. Does not bring back the icon tray.

    Hi, Cycletech,

The Norton Removal Tool is trying to connect to the outbound network (or internet). Does it need to download something? The computer which I am trying to remove Norton is not connected to the net. Is there a standalone tool?

The only other tool is the Cleanwipe tool. That tool will remove most Symantec products, so be careful if you are running other Symantec software on this system.

You will need to open a support case to get the Cleanwipe utility.

    Strange !!!

does the console open when you try to open it?

does it complain about any permission issue?

i would suggest you to remove SEP

and right click on setup.exe and select run as admin? disable UAC before running the setup.

    Cycletech,

What is the difference between the cleanwipe and the removal tool then? I thought the removal tool will remove ALL traces of prior Norton installs; thus, by definition, what can cleanwipe add to the removal procedure?

The Norton removal tool removes Norton branded software.

The cleanwipe tool removes Symantec branded software.

if your client is still alive, try to export an appropriate policy set from a different client where the icon is enabled: Help & Support > Troubleshooting > Ex/Import. The other client may be managed or not -- doesn't matter.

Try logging with a different uswer account, and see. Also, see, if the Symantec Management client service is started or not. if it is not, start  it.

We have finally succeeded in installing NEP 11.0.6200.754 (RU6 MP2), and we got the NEP icon to show in the notification area.

Now, there is another major problem.

Before we used the live update, the windows security alerts icon was showing up in the notification area normally after every reboot (because we turned off some of the functions in alerts, it would always show up a message to complain).

After the live update, and the system is rebooted, windows security alerts icon is NO LONGER showing up in the notification area normally after reboots. Further, we can't even force the icon to show up by going into Windows Security in Control Panel and manually turn on option for the windows security alerts to show both icon and notification.

The live update broke this. Can you please tell me what went wrong?

This upgrade has been extremely frustrating!!!! >:

i dont think there is any relation with LU and windows alerts?

is your client managed or u installed it as unmanaged?

    open sepm

    policies

firewall policy, with draw it from this client group...

If you want the Windows Security Center to show up:

Go into your AV policy >> Miscellaneous >> Under Windows Security Center you can tweak the options to your liking.

It is an unmanaged client, so it is not a policy issue.

I tried to "reset" the Windows Alert in System/Window Security in Control Panel of the client Windows, but the option to "show" icon does not work (I can click on it but nothing shows up).

    Very weird. Help?
