Symantec scans my computer weekly and has identified four high risk viruses named Adware.Gen that have to be removed "manually."  Can anyone tell me how to do this?
(I'm in the older generation and not too cyber-skilled).

    Hi,

Adware.Gen should be the detection name for a generic Adware.
    This is an Adware:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adware
Check the list of well-known adware programs and the antivirus risk log in order to know which software is detected as an adware and then decide if it comes from a trusted source or not.
Eventually you can hire a cyber-skilled guy for a couple of hours to check the security status of your systems.

Hi Nesjr, what are the details of the infection? Filenames and folders/paths where the virus was detected?

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this Adware.Gen virus (File Name: cpbrkpie.ocx) from my Dell computer?  Norton System Works Premium 2005 detected it in a full system scan, however both Quarantine Failed and Delete Failed.  Norton item information says: "The compressed file cpbrkpie.ocx within C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\TCCFP9SP\cpbrkpie[1].cab is infected with the Adware.Gen virus."  Can anyone help?

Empty your temporary Internet files through your browser, or delete the subfolder?

Yes.. the delete fail might be becuase the user is still accessing the file on the temp...
You could also iehistory... that is a application freebie to check the sites that the user had went to...
    Print it and inform security...
this will take one user down from your worries..

    1. Close all applications first
    2. Delete all temporary internet files including all the cookies.

If the threat reappears, check the browsing history. Look for suspicious sites, those you know you didn't visit and still appears in history.
They're usually just IP addresses or with words relating to advertisements from sites you don't know or not in english or any comprehensible language.

Try also to do a full scan on safe mode. if the file is still being used, used the unlocker tool to unlock the file then delete it.

    path of the unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
