I'm using Symantec antivirus(SAV) corporate version 10.0.2.2011 on windows XP pro.  SAV is consistently using between 120 and 140 megs of memory.  It's causing me a significant amount of sluggishness to my computer. Why? Why symantec, why?  If I disable the auto scan, still 140 megs.  When it appears to not be scanning anything at all? 140 megs.  I searched the internet and most people have SAV using about 70-80 megs, and they're pissed off about that.  Me, 140. not 80, not an acceptable 40 or 20. no, 140.  It's using more memory than anything else on my computer, or everything else sometimes.  I need my computer to actually do computations, so that 140 megs is important to me.  I wont even get into the processing.  Please tell me how to fix this!  You owe this to me after all the time I spent trying to find a solution on the internet and on your glitchy website (That's right, your website is glitchy.  Fix it).  SAV is so detrimental to my computer's performance right now that It feels like it's a virus.   I am so angry at SAV right now and every now that it continues to hog all my memory.  Not to be redundant, but tell me what I have to do to cut this hog down to bacon.  By the way,  I appologize if this isn't in the right forum.  I didn't see a customer service forum, or a general problems forum or any forum that has a title that's applicable, so I'm just gonna drop this somewhere and hope that you see it.  Endpoint protection?  What is that?  Should I even know what that is?!  I hope you can feel the anger I'm radiating right now.

So that's all I can do?  It's a corporate version.  I can't convince corporate to upgrade this.  All they do is sit around and drink mint juleps and talk about the good old days when they used to push a hoop with a stick down a dirt road.  Those cheep slack jawed yokels wouldn't pay for a Christmas bonus, or any bonus, let alone any licensing fees or what have you.  They gave me a calculator with a tape roll that plugs into the wall for the love of dog!  Most of them where dumbfounded when I showed them the calc.exe (and they're still too scared of it to use it!!).  There must be something I can do.  Some setting, some kind of memory restriction, something with duct tape?  Please, please, please, please, please.   I work in a sea of scared stingy bosons that still sacrifice goats for a good rainy season.  Ever see Office Space?  It's like that, but not funny and 10 times more soul crushing per square cubelette.

If it just for your system then here's my recommendation
    1. Turn off Tamper Protection
2.Create exclusion for programs/softwares you commonly use.

That seemed to work.  It's down to a minor annoyance level of 71megs.  In fact, I only had to exclude 1 file:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Logs\wbemcore.log

For some reason that log constantly rewrites itself with the error message:
"GetUserDefaultLCID failed, restorting to system verion"  [sic]

This caused SAV to constantly scan the thing over and over.  I'm not sure what that error is, or why it would be misspelled, but a quick glance through the net turns up a reassuring "you can ignore this"...something to do with service pack 3 on XP pro causing me to go crosseyed.   If I've just fallen into a nefarious trap by excluding that file, let me know.  Vikram, I owe you a pint-o-booze. Thanks!

p.s.  If megs blow up again, I'll be back and screaming.

Not only  is the version you are running old. It's no longer supported, and has documented security vulnerabilities. You should seriously consider migrating to SEP 11.0.5002.333.
