Host Interface Error

Created: 17 Jan 2005 • Updated: 22 May 2010 | 3 comments

I am running Veritas 9.1 on a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server.

We are having one particular issue that casues concern. The error :
The tape drive has a problem with the host interface:
1. Check the cables and cable connections.
2. Restart the operation.

The server is no more than a month old. Veritas was working fine for about 2 weeks. We have tried tapes that have been written on before and brand new tapes. I have contacted dell, and ran some hardware tests on the drive. I was able to successfully preform a read/write test on the drive. The drive is a DDS4

I can preform a test run and an inventory test successfully in veritas. But when a scheduled backup attempts to run It will not launch and I will see this error on the morning.

Install latest VERITAS drivers from the following link:

Title: VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only)

http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

To isolate the issue:
------------------------------

a. Perform backup using Backup to Disk folder. This step is for test purpose only.
Title: How to create a Backup Folder in order to backup to disk?
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/237674.htm

b. Perform the backup operation from NTBackup utility. Stop all Backup Exec related services prior to running the NTBackup. This will help us in isolating the issue. If you face the same problem in NT Backup then please contact your hardware vendor and get the device checked.

We presume that the step mentioned above has solved your problem. Let us know if the problem still exists and revert back with the error message.
