Host service keeps stopping

Created: 10 May 2013 • Updated: 23 May 2013 | 9 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have pcAnywhere 12.5 SP3 setup on a new Win 7 Ultimate machine.  I configured the host to startup with Windows.  This computer ultimately will have no internet access and is not on a network, so we will be using a dial-up connection.  The modem is installed and the modem host is setup and it all works.  The problem is, the pcA host service just stops randomly.  I can restart it, but then it randomly stops again anywhere from a couple of minutes to several hours.  I've rebooted and it does the same thing.  The Event Viewer only says "The Symantec pcAnywhere Host Service service entered the stopped state" with event ID 7036.  I can connect remotely when the service is running, so it's all setup properly, but why does the service randomly stop?

Did you try reinstall pcanywhere client ?

Did you try logging off and logging in again?

Yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled and same result.

Tried rebooting.  Only one user configured on the computer, and it is adminstrative user.

Error: "Cannot start requested service" when launching a pcAnywhere host

Thanks.

Tech 106658 refers to not being able to start the host service.  I don't get any errors and the host service starts and runs fine when the computer boots or if I start it manually via Services, my problem is the service stops itself (I checked and it is configured to start automatically and I set all the Recovery settings to "Restart", per another suggestion I saw somewhere else).  The only part of that tech note that might apply is the Program Files situation, but since the host service starts, I assume this isn't the issue.  This is a 64-bit system, I forgot to mention, if that matters.

When you start the service what is the error message popup on screen?

Thanks.

There is no error.  The service starts and runs fine.  The problem is the service stops randomly.  No error messages at all, the service just stops.  I can restart the service and it will run for a while (anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours) and then it will stop again.

SOLUTION

It's been almost 24 hours and it's still running, so maybe that was the answer.  Even though my situation doesn't match a single thing mentioned in that tech note, the solution seems to have solved my problem.  I'll keep an eye on it, but thanks for the suggestion!
