Hot oracle RMAN backups

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a question in regards to Oracle RMAN hot backups.  The parent job of the Oracle backups in Netbackup is a zero byte file but is assigned a backup ID in Netbackup.  It is also my understanding that this a control file and is needed to restore the DB's that were backed up.  Can someone elaborate and confirm?

Also, the DBA's asked to extend the retention of these backups for a period of time.  I did extend the retention on the backup id and it does show in the "Clinet Backups" report, but not in the "Images on Media" or the "Images on Disk" report.  Why?  I understand that this is a 0 byte file, but where is it stored especially if you need this file in order to restore the DB's.

The job you are talking about is the parent job of a backup normaly in RMAN jobs you create multiple jobs also known as RMAN Channels, this is basically the same logic as Multiple Streamed jobs, you have a parent job that controls the child ones, communication, logging, metadata and assignment of resources the child jobs are the data movers those are the ones who actually move data from Oracale/RMAN/Client to NBU Media Server, in the end this parent job doesnt move any kind of data thats why some times finish with 0KB.

Hope this helps.

parent job is just that - it contains no actual backup.

Control file is backed up in one of the child streams.

See this TN about backup of Control files and how to list/verify:
