  • 1.  Hourly Scheduled Replications fails with "String index out of range: -1" with MR4 MP1a

    Posted Apr 13, 2009 02:38 PM
I have had hourly replication working between two MR4 MP1a SEPM servers without any issues for more than a month until this morning.  Replication succeeds one direction, but the other fails with “String index out of range: -1.”  According to the release notes for MR4 MP1a (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid_p/2007121216360648) this bug was fixed in this release.

I have replication configured to replicate the logs (both directions) and the client packages and LiveUpdate content between servers.  I have found if I uncheck the replication of logs and also the client packages and LiveUpdate content between servers then I can perform a manual replication, which is successful.  Then if recheck these boxes, I can perform another manual replication, which completes successful.  But the next hourly replication fails with “String index out of range: -1.”

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?  I would call support, but the several calls I have placed this year takes 1 to 1.5 hours of hold time before taking to someone that doesn’t know much and then it takes on average 1-3 weeks to get any issues resolved, so I am trying the forms instead.

Thanks for the information Sam Are there any know workarounds? For me when this error occurs then all sequential replications from that server fail with the same error. The only workaround I have found to get replication to work again in both directions (instead of just one) is to perform the following steps: 1) Log on to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console for the server that generated the “String index out of range: -1” error message. 2) Go to Admin>Servers>Local Site>Replication Partners><name of replication partner>>Edit Replication Partner Properties 3) Uncheck “Replicate logs from this partner site to the local site” 4) Click OK 5) Perform a onetime Replicate Now 6) What until the replication completes 7) Go back to Edit Replication Partner Properties 8) Recheck “Replicate logs from this partner site to the local site” 9) Click OK 10) Perform a onetime Replicate Now This manual replication completes and the next hour hourly scheduled replication occurs successfully. Since Monday morning (just started on Monday) these errors has been occurring on average 2 to 3 times a day and I must complete the above steps to get replication to occur again both directions. I hope Symantec is able to release a fix to the issue soon.

    HI Scott,

Escalate the same to Symantec Technical Support Team by opening a new case.

Unless and until they can't troubleshoot the same, they wont release any fix.

Request you to open the case at the earliest.

    Rgrds,
    SAM

I opened a case today and was told there is a fix to this bug, but it won't be available until MP2.  Hopefully Symantec actually fixes this bug this time, since the release notes for MR4 MP1 (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid_p/2007121216360648) stated that it was states that it was fixed then too.

I updated the SEPMs less than a week ago and have not had the error since.

I'm getting this exact same problem and clearing the logs as Scott says seems to work.... don't know for how long though

    I'm running 11.0.4014.26

since this issue is resolved in MR4 MP2.

However the latest version is RU5, upgrading SEPM will be more stable.

I haven't seen this issue since upgrading to MR4 MP2, but I am currently on MR5 (11.0.5002.333) and I have to say that this is the best release I have every seen for SEP (not perfect, but by far the most stable).  I would highly recommend upgrading to MR5 to prevent additional issues.
