How to Backup Terastation (TS5200D0202) to Tape Using Either Archive Bit or Modified Time

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a Buffalo Terastation 5200 (TS5200D0202) that needs to have files backed up to tape via Backup Exec.  M-Th are incremental and F is full backup.  Full backup runs just fine and as expected but the incrementals all attempt to backup 100% of the files just like the full backup.  I've searched and have only found one or two articles out here that sort of address this problem but the articles are for old Backup Exec versions.  Buffalo's forums weren't much help since the one article I came across had no responses from the OP.  It's my understanding that the archive bit cannot be reset on files stored on the Terastation and it doesn't appear that the Backup Method of "By modified time" doesn't work either in this case.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

  • Backup Exec version: 2012 SP1a with current patches
  • Windows 2008 Server Enterprise x64 (not R2)
  • Terastation fileshare is SMB
  • Terastation is running the current firmware

This is the expected behaviour.  Incremental/Differential backup is not supported on a device which does not have RAWS/RALUS loaded.  See the solutions section of this document.
