How can I get a remote NBU env (OST/DataDomain) to "see" duplicated images from another NBU env?

This issue has been solved. See solution.

We have 2 NB 6.5.6 masters (SiteA and SiteB, on solaris) in different locations. At each location we also have a DataDomain appliance. We are using OST and SLPs to duplicate backups across the 2 DataDomains. The setup is something like this:

SiteA_media_server writes copy one to diskpool SiteA_Local_DD and duplicates to diskpool SiteB_Dupe_DD.

SiteB_media_server writes copy one to diskpool SiteB_Local_DD and duplicates to diskpool SiteA_Dupe_DD

How can I get the remote master to "see" the local master's duped images for import? I tried to initiate an import from SiteB master of SiteA's duped images, but in the drop down, I don't see SiteB_Dupe_DD (which are the duped images from SiteA.

I'm thinking I have to create all diskpools on both NB environments, but I figured I'd post in case there are other steps/caveats.

You may conside a upgrade to NBU 7.1 where AIR will solve the pussle.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

AIR is not supported with OST as of yet with DataDomain IIRC

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."

This method can be used until such time that DD will support AIR:

Config both DD's at production site. Duplicate all backups using SLP's.

Config DD at DR site on DR master (disk pool, stu).

  1. Run backup at production
  2. Wait for duplication to complete
  3. Run catalog backup to DR-Storage Unit
  4. On DR master, run nbcatsync to update dr-file
  5. Run catalog restore (bprecover -wizard, restore images only)
  6. Run nbcatsync to update media-id for all images restored by bprecover
  7. Use Catalog section of GUI to search for ALL images. Promote all ‘copy 2’ images to primary.
  8. Add FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = prod-server  dr-server  entry
  9. Test restore ....

Some nbcatsync documentation:

NB: nbcatsync will take a long time to complete at DR site because it does not have access to DD at production. (We have not tested with DR master having access to both DD's).

This TN advises against the use of nbcatsync in method described above due to longer time taken:
