This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi-

I only have one server that has an LTO-4 tape drive. The other servers have SAS drives, but no external cable to connect the tape drive.

Does anyone have any good tips about how to practice a tape based recovery?

Hi

As per the your post above the Backup exec system recovery which is bare metal s/w is only disk based s/w so tape backup is not supported with this s/w

Also I have attached the documentation for BESR

Please mark this post solved if this has clear your douts

Thank You

If you have similiar hardware for your recovery, BE should be able to recover your server on it.  IDR will help to automate the process.

Hi

But IDR won't provide bare metal recovery as said by pkh you can only do automated restore on same h/w & this option would be free but not right option if you are only looking for bare metal s/w

Thank You

Here are few technotes which will help you in performing Disaster Recovery of the server from the Tape drive. Please refer to the appropriate technote depending on the Operating System version that you are using:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH10837 : Disaster Recovery of a remote Windows 2000 or 2003 computer (includes non-authoritative restore of Active Directory for a domain controller)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH86323 : Disaster Recovery of a remote Windows 2008 computer (includes both non-authoritative and authoritative restore of Active Directory for a domain controller)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH10797 : Disaster recovery of a local Windows 2000 or 2003 computer (includes non-authoritative restore of Active Directory for a domain controller)

In all the procedures that are given in the technote you first need to install the OS and then perform the Disaster Recovery. So to also automate the process of installing the OS you a perform the Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR). Please refer to the following technote to perform the IDR:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH5570 : The Intelligent Disaster Recovery process, step by step

(Note that the screenshots in this technote may vary a bit if you are using latest version of BE)

Also I understand that Bare Metal restore is a where you can restore to completely different hardware. Backup Exec will not be able to perform the Bare Metal restore so all the above procedures are the restore to the same hardware (some minor changes in the hardware are acceptable)

For complete Bare metal restore you can use Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR)

Thanks,
