how can I repair a deduplication storage

Created: 02 Aug 2013 | 14 comments

Hi,

I'm using BE 2012 SP2 with deduplication
If I backup a Fileserver with deduplication, the backup job is running fine, but the verifying job returns an error:

Überprüfen- \\<SERVER>\E:
Unstimmigkeit auf Speichermedium in Dedup:4.
V-79-57344-33994 - Von Medium gelesene Daten sind nicht konsistent.

I tried already an "inventory and catalog" but this doesn't resolve the issue.

How can I resolve this error?
How can I repair the deduplication storage?

Thanks
Matthias

Are you using software or hardware encryption in this job?

I would suggest that you log a support case with Symantec for them to take a look at this problem.  Damaged dedup folders cannot be repaired by users.

Is it happening only for one specific job (server) or is it happening with all the jobs....and data being backed from the e drive does it have any files like .pst...

Yes, it's only one Job. There are 4 other Jobs (with deduplication) which are running fine.
No .pst Files.
And it's not only drive e. The same message appears for each drive which was backed up.

My guess is, that some Dedup-Files are missing/corrupt but the Dedup-Database thinks they are there and don't backup them again.
Before this error appeared, the previous backup had an error:
"Speichergerät "Dedup:10" hat bei folgender Anforderung einen Fehler gemeldet: Lesen von Daten vom Medium.
V-79-57344-34029 - Hardware-Fehler aufgetreten."

As I said, the next full backup was fine, but the verify shows this error

Is this local dedupe folder or is it ost appliance....do u have any antivirus running on be server....could you please check if any scan runs at the time when backup job in question is running....as in error it says its unable to read data from media....

DB_Fernverkehr's picture

it is a local dedup folder with a RAID 6.
Yes Antivirus (Microsoft Forefront) is running, but I think the error message has nothing to do with antivirus.
My guess is, that this happened because of a backup on another Backup-Server which runs on the same time. (configuration mistake of me)

Now, the backup self is ok, only verify has a problem.

Is there no possibility to say BE, "please, backup everything you can't read on the dedup folder"?

Backup writes the data to the deduplication folder and verify reads the data.

IMHO If both read and write operation is running at the same time it can cause inconsistent data.

Symantec also recommend running verify job as a sepeate job at the time when no bakcup jobs are runing.

Can you provide some documentation to backup this statement?

Please correct me if I am wrong are you backing up same data on different media server at the same time or is it that backup job starts on other media server for same resource while verify is in progress...
If this scenarios are true schedule the job to run on different time and that no two jobs of same server are running at same time ....
than check hopefully this should resolve the issue

I had some backup jobs which ran on two media Servers at the same time, but I corrected this mistake already.
I guess, this is the reason that deduplication became inconsistent
I'd like to know, how to get the deduplication storage consistent.

Kunal.Mudliyar's picture

Please run an inventory on the Deduplication folder when no other jobs are running.

If you see corrupts OST please report to us.

If the inventory job goes and report no corrupt OSTs you are good to go.

I tried this already.
Inventory is ok, no Errors.
But catalog returns some errors:
0xe0000900
