you can enable the sylink log on client to know the size of definition downloaded.

Hi,

or you can enable the IIS logging for the Content virtual folder of the Symantec Web Server (in the SEPM server). In this way for a centralized point of view you can see anything downloaded by all clients instead of by enabling the sylink.log and check it client by client.

Giuseppe

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't GUPs skew the data?

As clients download data from the GUP, IIS on the SEPM will never see those downloads and therefore not be recorded in the IIS log files.

Thus, your only option is to enable SYLINK logging. Can the DEBUG level be managed to ensure the log file does not grow to big, but still have the data for size downloaded.

For the previous posters, telling me to enable SYLINK logging is all good and well, but how about some more details? How about helping your users understand the product instead of having to decipher it for themselves?

  • What should we be looking for?
  • Which specific line entry?
  • What are the different fields in that line?
  • etc.

Hi,

yes, you are right, content from GUP to client won't be logged in IIS but I don't know if they use GUPs or not.

Please, note that Symantec's employees too are contributing to this forum during their spare time and not always it is enough for a Q&A. If have 5 minutes, I do my best to understand the question, give a possible answer and leaving a couple of minutes for a possible feedback. We are certainly happy to help our users to understand the product but not all things are easy to be explained in a forum, a call will be more comfortable. Because IIS logs do not need the same explanations to be red as the sylink.log, I offered them as alternative.

To be honest, other things should be asked to the user before going ahead, see my next post.

Giuseppe

Hi,

Why do you need it? Do you need to know the space occupied in the HDD or the used bandwidth?

Giuseppe

I'd like to see the bandwidth usage as part of the stats but it would mostly be a curiousity, it is possible a small business would be watching their connections closer.

So, for small business, likely without GUPs, IIS logs is a good place to see the size of the transferred files.
