Hi.

We have 2 magazines, left magazine with  8 tapes and empty right magazine. I would like to know how can we identify the data written on the which tapes.

Can I segregate tapes according to the policies created, Like , we have 8 servers to be backed up on daily, monthly basis, so we created 8 different policies. Can I assign each tape for each policies created.

... tapes are allocated by volume pool and retention.  You could allocate each server to different pool but I don't recommend it.  Keep things simple.  You can always determine what is on a given tape by querying the various Tape Reports.

I agree with Bill - no need to micro-manage. NBU knows where data is written. As long as you have sufficient media for different retention levels, allow NBU to add multiple clients to the same tape.
Hopefully your robot has a barcode reader and your tapes have barcode labels on them?

You will even see improvement in throughput if you allow multiplexing in Storage Unit and schedules (MPX=4 is normally good starting point).

Please bear in mind that NBU does not mix retention levels. You can override this setting, but it is never a good idea - works seemingly well initially until tape fills up and cannot be overwritten because of retention mix on tapes. All images must expire before tape can be overwritten. See this blog for more info:

If you need to know what images are on tapes, use 'Images on media' in Reports section.

If you need to restore a specific file/folder for any of the Clients, use BAR (Backup, Archive & Restore) GUI to browse for files/folders. If you then click Media Preview button, NBU will display the Media IDs where backup was written.

Hi friends.

In Dell Powervault 124T I installed 8 new tapes for backup, but while taking backup, I am getting a error message

STATUS CODE: 96 "Unable to allocate new media for backup" error message occurs even when the appropriate tapes are available

How can I rectify this error.

Also, when I see volume pool, I can see lots of old media also, I would like to delete them and keep new one's only.

I have barcode on each tapes for identification.

Thank You

Check pool name in policy, then check Storage Unit properties - robot number and density. Check retention level in the schedule that failed.
Next, go to Media GUI and select the robot (same robot number as STU). Check for tapes in same pool and same density. If tapes are Assigned, it means that they have previous backups on. Check that the retention matches the retention in the schedule. Check that tapes are not FROZEN as a result of previous errors.

I am not able to understand properly. Can you please elaborate a bit

mph999's picture

The drives and the tapes both have a density ...

tpconfig -d will show the drive density (probably hcart/ hcart2 etc ...)

vmquery -a -b will show the tape desity (under heading media type)

Are they the same ?

Are the tapes either in the scratch volume pool or the correct volume pool for the backup you wish to run ?

Are the tapes showing as frozen  ?   (run /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/available_media  report).

While creating the policies, We select

Policy Storage-his1-hcart3-robot-tld(0)

Policy Volume:Netbackup.

When I am doing manual backup, It's successful backup, but when I see weekly backup's or monthly backup, I see Status 96 error

What volume pool does the weekly backup use

We have 8 Servers here, which needs to be backed up on (yearly, monthly, weekly) basis. We created policies for each server.

Does all policies must have different start and end time??

girish_nair1984's picture

The volume pool, We are using while creating policies is Netbackup.

Do I need to override policy volume pool & Override policy storage selection in weekly, monthly & yearly schedules

Insufficient knowledge about any backup product will lead to major data loss.

Before break-up, make sure you have a good backup.....  ;-)

No, there is no need to override the volume pool.  It is an option, but is not required.

So, if you are using the netbackup volume pool, please see if there are tapes available in that pool.

Run the available media script;

In the netbackup/bin/goodies directory.

Hi friends.

Thanks for your support.

We have 2 Dell Tape Drive with same policy types.

On one the tape drive, I am getting a error message

Status 196: client backup was not attempted because backup window closed

But the same policy is working properly on another tape drive.
