  • 1.  How to compact WinPE image in DS 6.9?

    Hello,

I would like to reduce at maximum the WinPE image used for deployment in our DS 6.9 installation.

Is it possible? I suppose that removing all drivers and including only the ones that we need in our environment the image will be smaller but ...

    Any idea?

    Thanks.

Yes, removing the drivers, and also the utilities that you include with WinPE is the only way I am aware of reducing the size.

Yes, WinPE is a bit of a monster. I agree with the above comment... you COULD remove HTA/WMI functionality if you don't need it. You can also specifically include drivers that you need. That will help greatly.

Also, if you're running DS 6.x, make sure you have the "Compres WIM" option enabled, as that makes things a bit better as well.

Finally, consider replacing the "Altiris MTFTP Service" binary with the one from the free/Open Source "openTFTP" project. There is an article on here about getting that configured (or I can help if you need it). It speeds up the process by some 10x - which makes the WinPE size slightly less important.

Starting in DS 6.9 SP3 the link https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/faster-pxe-winpe-21-boot no longer applies. DS now has that implementation by default.  I guess removing drivers is a good thing but I believe Winpe 2.1 goes as low as ~95Megs.  What is that you trying to accomplish?  You can change the MTU size to tweek speeds.
