client server Netbackup 7.1 Solaris 9

Hello ALL,

can you clarify the how to create FlashBackup policy.

I used this document (at chapter 4)  http://kbdownload.symantec.com/resources/sites/BUS.

But I couldnt.

PS. structure of  mount point is like this.

root@kls# cat /etc/vfstab

#device device  mount   FS      fsck    mount   mount
#to     mount   to      fsck            point           type    pass    at boot options
#
fd      -       /dev/fd fd      -       no      -
/proc   -       /proc   proc    -       no      -
/dev/vx/dsk/bootdg/swapvol      -       -       swap    -       no      -
/dev/vx/dsk/bootdg/rootvol      /dev/vx/rdsk/bootdg/rootvol     /       ufs     1       no      -
swap    -       /tmp    tmpfs   -       yes     size=6144m

/dev/vx/dsk/bootdg/rootdg_25vol /dev/vx/rdsk/bootdg/rootdg_25vol        /global/.devices/node@2 ufs     2       no      global

/dev/vx/dsk/datadg_3510/datavol01       /dev/vx/rdsk/datadg_3510/datavol01      /datavol01      ufs     2       no      largefiles

would you like to take the backup of all FS through flashbackup or any specific File systems?

But I couldnt.

Please tell why - What did not work for you ?

Please note: Flashbackup require you to specify the block device e.g. /dev/vx/dsk/data_dg/{somthing} and not /datavol01

Have you seen "Symantec NetBackup Snapshot Client 7.5 Administrator’s Guide" - chapter 4. Configuring Flashbackup.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

Dear Nicolai. Let me explain how I did and what error I get.

please tell me where is the inconsistency

As shown on document chapter 4.

I did poicy type FlashBackup

Then I checked   Snapshot Client  :  Perform Snapshot Backups (Option Auto)

Backup selection : /dev/vx/rdsk/datadg_3510/datavol01

But when I starting this policy failing with the following error

Here is your error:

02/25/2014 23:56:09 - Critical bpbrm (pid=19940) from client opsc-1: FTL - No snapshot method available for /datavol01

You have selected auto and yet your system has no way of creating a snapshot for you to back up.

When you choose auto NetBackup will use nbu_snap (Appendix A of the admin guide)

You need to select a cache location for it to work - see this tech note as a starting point:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO69378

If it is not suitable for your system then you need to select a suitable snapshot method

So for cache location, should be empty ,unmounted disk device or partition?

on system there is no like this disk))

Without cache there is no option?  just I tried changing auto to VxVM but same problem..

Mark_Solutions's picture

Do you have vxvm installed?

Cache should be on a raw partition according to the guide

Dear Friends,

Now I trying to create flashbackup on test server ( netbackup 7.5, solaris 10.)

1.Now I created policy with FlashBackup type.

2.I selected Perform snapshot backups Option as NBU_Snap.(.And here I specified cache location.)       Except nbu_snap ,others are givin error. So I choosed nbu_snap

4. And also I specified cache device on client settings  :

Host Properties > Clients > Client Properties dialog > UNIX Client
> Client Settings, -> Default cache device path for snapshots

5.  Backup selection is like this:

   CACHE=/dev/rdsk/c0t600A0B800038A3910000078D4D4A6072d0s0
   /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s0

After all this I am getting error with code 9 when starting the policy :

You will need to upgrade master/media or reinstall client with 7.1.

So, you are now testing a different client. There is still a support issue:

Error bpbrm (pid=30528) from client gantek2: ERR - FlashBackup feature not supported

The 1st one had VxVM installed but did not have a snapshot volume/partition.

We need to find out what is different about the 2nd client.

What kind of Volume Manager and Filesystem on this client?

Have you created bpfis log folder on the new client?
Please copy the log file to bpfis.txt and upload as File attachment.

Yes ..1-st client is production. So I cant play on it now. VxVM installed and not existing empty raw device. If I can do on test server flashBackup policy... I will ask from responsible person to import raw device on this production machine  to solve problem.

On test machine (2nd client) is filesystem is SVM.

You have specified  /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s0 as raw device to be backed up, but what does partitioning table look like for this disk?

vfstab shows that s4 is mounted.
    /dev/dsk/c2t2d0s4 /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s4    /distr  ufs     3       yes     logging

Is there any data in s0 partition?
Why is s0 not mounted if it contains data?

CACHE=/dev/rdsk/c0t600A0B800038A3910000078D4D4A6072d0s0

Are you 100% sure this partition is unused?
Is there a possibility that this disk is set up as mirror for the boot disk?

I don't understand what this means:

I couldnt  create logging.. bpfis.

We don't need level 5 log at this point in time.

It is possible that snapshot was not attempted because of unusable volumes specified in Backup Selection.

Create bpbkar log folder as well after you have double-check that valid device names are used to be backed up and for CACHE volume.

/dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s0 --> d11 submirror of d10 svm  /dev/md/rdsk/d10   mounted for  root / partition.

Yes as as you told it is mirrored for root partition..

for cache device  CACHE=/dev/rdsk/c0t600A0B800038A3910000078D4D4A6072d0s0  .

I am sure,,it is unused..even I  recreated the partition to be sure..

instead of /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s0  I used to backup up /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s4  which is mounted as /distr..same error

Marianne's picture

/dev/rdsk/c2t2d0s0 --> d11 submirror of d10 svm  /dev/md/rdsk/d10   mounted for  root / partition.

So, this partition is under SVM control. Not supported for FlashBackup.

Yes as as you told it is mirrored for root partition..

That means it is USED. You CANNOT select it for CACHE volume.

You need to find a system that is using 'normal' Solaris disk management (not SVM or ZFS) or else VxVM with a usable, unused CACHE partition.

Oh! and cache must not be specified in Backup Selection if 'Perform Snapshot backup' is selected in Policy Attributes.

See this extract from Snapshot Client manual:

Note: CACHE entries are allowed only when the policy’s Perform snapshot backups
option is deselected. If Perform snapshot backups is selected, NetBackup attempts
to back up the CACHE entry and the backup fails.

And also:

UNIX only: if you selected nbu_snap or VxFS_Snapshot as the snapshot
method, specify a raw partition as cache, in either of these ways:
■ Use the Host Properties node of the Administration Console to specify
the default cache device path for snapshots. Click Host Properties >
Clients, select the client, then Actions>Properties, UNIX Client>Client
Settings.
■ Use the Snapshot Client Options dialog to specify the cache.
See “How to enter the cache” on page 149.

Have you gone through the cache size recommendations in the manual?

What is the partition size of c0t6001438002A55D5A0000C00000B00000d0s0?

Please select this disk in 'format', select p (for partition) then p (for print).

What snashot option is selected in Advanced Options?

Did you remember to create bpfis and bpbkar log folders?
Please copy them to .txt files (e.g. bpfis.txt) and upload as File attachment.

PS:
I hope that you check and verify compatibility each time that you try a different client.
