How to delete a SAN MEDIA SERVER
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 3 comments
Hi all,
I have to de-comission a SAN MEDIA SERVER from my Netbackup 6.0 Environment soon (NBU 6, MP4, Windows 2003)
I've seen the section on how to decomission a MEDIA server on page 332 from the Media Manager Admin guide, but it is not on about a SAN MEDIA SERVER unfortunately.
Also, there is a warning about decomissioning servers when you use VAULT, which we happen to use...
My question:
Does anyone have or know of a guide on how to decomission a SAN MEDIA SERVER connected to a master server with VAULT or should I consider consultancy to do this trick?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide :)

Hi Manfred,
I've not done it myself but from the understanding that a SAN media server is very much like a media server except that it can only backup itself, I would presume that the steps to de-commission it are pretty much the same. I think what's important most is to move out the media that was assigned to it and re-assigning them. The rest of the stuff like device database is media server specific and should not be of matter.
Following technote give some good pointers of moving the associated media which could be helpful:

How to correctly decommission a NetBackup Media Server and remove it from the NetBackup environment
Hi Chia,
First of all: Thanks for your answer!
I indeed do expect the procedure to be very (If not completely) similar to the deletion of a media server.
In the admin guide the was a specific warning about VAULT though, which worries me somewhat:
"If you are using NetBackup Vault and plan to decomission a media server, it is recommended that you contact VERITAS Consulting for help with this task."

you may have to do something like this
