    Dear sir,
I got a mail from Symantec that I qualified for a free upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition. I have done the upgrade now and the application is now asking me to activate my product within the next 25 days now.  Please where /how will I do that and also, where will I get the product key (incase I need it) for the activation.
    Your reply is highly appreciated.

How to install a license in Symantec Protection Center Small Business Edition

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009011911404248

You will get the SLF file here

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009052614202348

To register your serial number select Activate your Product from the Welcome Screen. You can also navigate to the Admin Tab – Licensing Tab and select Register Serial Number in the management console.

On the Symantec Licensing Portal website enter your login credentials and select Login if you already have an account. If you do not have an account, select Create An Account. Once you have created an account a confirmation email will be sent to the email addressed specific during the account creation.

Once you have logged in to the Licensing Portal, select New Purchase. On the page that appears, input yourSerial Number, and then select Submit.

On the next page that appears, select the Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition (SEP SBE 12) license. This will cause a check mark to appear in the box to the left of this license. If you have additional license serial numbers to enter, add them on this page. Then select Next to continue with the installation

On the next page that appears, verify your account information and ensure that the correct email is listed for where the confirmation Email will be sent. Then select Complete Registration

On the next page that appears, you should download your license file by selecting Download License Key File. The license file will have a .slf extension.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I followed all your steps one by one and i downloaded the .slf file.  After importing it into the Symantec Protection Center, I got a message that "The license is not supported".  This is one of the symantec Endpoint Protection SBE 11.0 licenses that I had but has not been activated before.  I was told that I can still use them with the Symantec Protection Center SBE.

Also, is activating User Business Pack licenses on the Symantec Protection Center SBE the same thing as activating the Symantec Protection Center SBE application?

    Hi Fizz,

What exactly is the version of your SEP SBE? If you have SEP SBE 12.0, that's a stand-alone Antivirus license, you should install the License file generated from the Serial Number (ex. M1234567890) from License Portal or the license file attached with the License Certificate. On the other hand, if you have SEP SBE 11.0 - that's a bundled product which includes SEP 11.0 and SMS for Exchange so license file for that is good alone for SMS for Exchange because SEP 11.0 portion doesn't require activation.

    Still vague?

Since you have a secuirty software, I'm sure your license has a existing support which will entitle you for free Support. I think it's best if you will contact Symantec Customer Care (Licensing Dept) at 1-800-721-3934 to confirm your license details (which file is for which software) or Technical Support Department at 1-800-634-4747 option 1 for installation assistance, RA if needed.

    Hope that helps,
    Candy D.

If the license that you have is for SEP 11.0, it will not need any license file for activation. IF what you have is SEP SBE 12.0, you need an activation key, you may go to Licensing Portal to register your serial number to get the license file to activate the software that has been downloaded in fileconnect.

    - you may call customer care ( licensing department) at 1-800-721-3934 option 2 for further information.

Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.0 doesn’t need a license file if it is installed in an unmanaged environment. (no manager)
It will only require an activation if it is installed in a manage environment.

Unmanaged environment are individual computers that are not being managed by the server while in Managed environment, there is a manager installed and computers are communicating or connected on the main server

However, you need to have the serial number to download the software in fileconnect and register it in the license portal to get the license file.
