How do I capture an installation when its installer restarts my computer

Created: 04 Sep 2008 • Updated: 29 Jul 2010 | 3 comments

Hi

I am a novice to this, so please bear with me.

How to I set up SVS so that it captures a software program's complete installation when the program's installer says that it must restart my computer to complete the installation of the software. i.e Alcohol

I have read the documentation and cannot find where it tells you how to do this.

Alcohol says it must restart my computer and when I allow it to do so, SVS closes showing that it has captured Alcohol. When my computer restarts Alcohol does not run to complete its installation and neither does SVS to complete its capture of the installation.

Thanks for your help.

P.S:

If this question has been answered elsewhere could you please point me to the answer.

Cheers.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the advice, but it does not quite answer my question. maybe I have posted my question to the wrong forum, but I will try and explain my problem a little clearer.

I want to install Alcohol to use on my computer and I am using SVS to capture it as a read layer.

When I clik on the Alcohol exe from SVS, the installation starts and SVS shows the spinning icon on my tray. A few seconds into the installation Alcohol says it must restart my computer to complete, and I say Ok. My computer reboots, and when it does the Alcohol installtion does not start. When i look at SVS it says that it has captured Alcohol, and when i activate its layer nothing happens. I do not see Alcohol in the start_programs list either.

If I had used another uninstaller e.g Total Uninstlall,to capture the process, Total Uninstall would have kicked itself off after my computer restarted, and Alcohol will also have started to complete its installation which Total Uninstall would now still be capturing. When Alochol has completed, Total Uninstall would have captured the entire installtion before and after Alcohol restarted my computer.

As i said maybe my question should be on another forum, but I am not sure which forum it should be on. Is there an administrator to whom I could address this to get it posted to the correct forum?

Many thanks again

Firsat off all, SVS is not intended as a packaging solution for installations that need a reboot. For that you need Wise packaging solution.
But,,,,, Yes it cann be done.

start the capturing, and package Alcohol.
When Alcohol needs the reboot, you stop capturing before clicking on reboot.
Then reboot the machine.
Start SVS, and disable all layers if any active.
Then go to update layer, and select alcohol. Do a global capture.
If alcohol does not start, then restart the installation, and you will notice that the installation finishes.
Then your package is oke, but you need to clean it up a little bit.
Enjoy yourselve.
