  • 1.  How do I migrate on SEPM server, (all clients, groups, and settings) to another server?

    Posted Sep 05, 2009 11:04 PM
The scenario is pretty straight forward, say I have a SEPM server on a box that is not as powerful or can facilitate it. My company decides to purchase a new faster more stable server, what do I need to do to get the information from the old server to the new one?

    Thank you.

There are 4  ways in which the objective  can be achieved:

    1. Disaster Recovery
    2. Move SEPM form one server to another with the same ip address ( as suggetsed by vikram)
    3. Replication
4.Clean install on the new server and then replace the sylink.

    1. Disaster Recovery :

    2. Move SEPM form one server to another with the same ip address ( as suggetsed by vikram)

    3. Replication : Add a replication partner to the old SEPM. In your case add the new server as the Replcation partner.
Stop all SEPM service on the old SEPM so that all the cleints move to the new SEPM
                                Uninstall the old SEPM

4.Clean install on the new server and then replace the sylink.: Uinstall SEPM from the old server.
Install SEPM on the new server  and replace the sylink using any of these

Beware of the replication to replace the SEPM Prachand:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-move-sepm-server-another-different-server

According to this post it will not be possible to remove the old SEPM if you use replication and then remove the old "Master".

    Hi Maximilian

It is possible to replace on old server with a new one uisng replication.i have done this sucessfullly on more than one ocassion. ( We moved  4000 cleints from one server to another using replication )

The link that you have mentioned says that "YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE DO REPLICATION AGAIN" . If you want to know why replcation will not work let me know i will PM the reason.

Replcation is on alternative that has been suggeseted to the customer as per his question. there  are 3 more alternatives that are there the Customer can select any one of them.
But the important things is REPLICATION WILL SERVE THE OBJECTIVE

Alright so it is possible but you cannot create replication again. It is not the best solution of the 4 suggested then right? Since you kind of lock yourself in a corner and the possibility to enable this feature in the future.

Yes Max you are right Replication is not the best option in this senario as in the future we can't do replication

regarding the moving server to new servername/IP, we have done an in place upgrade of our existing server from MR2 to RU5. We now want to move that RU5 using the replication method to another box which wld require a clean install of RU5 on the new box. However according to this article our old installation of RU5 would be using the old port 80 for communication with clients (since it was an upgrade), but the new installation/server would use 8014.

So the way i understand it this wouldnt work because the clients wouldnt be able to communicate with the new server ? Does anyone have any advice on this ??
