How do I remove a server from the list of PXE servers managed by DS?
Hello. We just started trying to use DS to manage PXE servers so we could image PCs with Altiris. The LEFAUST server didn't get a good installation and DS is continually trying to copy/replicate data to it. I went to that server's console and stopped the services and performed an add/remove programs to get rid of the Altiris PXE software. On the status page of the PXE Configuration window, it still is trying to send data to that system. How do I get the DS server to drop that remote server off it's list of managed PXE servers?
Try a server reboot
I had the same issue. After removing the PXE server from the former server, I rebooted the DS and it did not attempt to contact the old server anymore.
Server reboot or restart services
Have you tried just restarting the pxe manager services on the pxe manager box and stopping the services on the broken pxe server.
I performed the reboot
I performed the reboot yesterday and that worked. I understand how restarting the PXE Manager on the DS server would work, so I will try that in the future. One would think that there would be an interface for adding/removing managed PXE servers.
So, I've got an accurate list
So, I've got an accurate list of managed servers, but now I'm trying to install additional ones. I do the following:
- run \DSsetup\setup.exe
- agree to the license agreement
- use the default file server path for the deployment share where images are stored
- check the box for "Install an additional Altiris PXE Server"
- choose to install PXE Server on a remote computer, and put in the coorect name, IP, and install path on the remote server
- put in AD credentials
and I get this screen. It doesn't matter if I use my credentials or those of the Altiris user we use for all Altiris installs. I've been looking for KB articles regarding this problem, but can't find any yet.
In testing, I can RDP into the remote server using either set of credentials. I can map a drive with net use from the DS console to the remote server using either account. What gives?
Thanks for your help.
Map a drive
Are you able to map a drive to the server in question with that username? Try that and see if you get any errors. It might be something as simple as file and print sharing not being turned on, firewall, or a trust being broken between the server and the domain.
Did that
Thanks for the suggestion, but "In testing, I can RDP into the remote server using either set of credentials. I can map a drive with net use from the DS console to the remote server using either account."
Administrative rights?
Do the accounts you are trying to use have administrator rights on the target machine? Are they a member of the Administrators group on the target server?
Can you try a local account on the target server? (i.e. if the server name is SERVER1, use SERVER1\user). If that works, there may be an issue with the domain account and that server (maybe rights?)
logged in user
I had the same issue installing an additional console on a remote computer. The logged in user didn't have rights to install anything so for some reason no matter what credentials I put in during the install it said I didn't have right to install. I logged the user off the computer and was then able to install the console. Might not be the same problem here but its worth a try.
More details
Trying to authenticate with the local PC_Name\Administrator account didn't help.
My AD account is in the Enterprise Admins, Domain Admins, and User Admins groups in AD.
The Altiris AD account is in Domain Admins.
The Package Servers we are trying to set up as PXE Imaging servers are actually workstation class hardware with WinXP SP3. (They serve small facilities.)
When using RDP (either into XP box or Win2000/2003 box), how does one tell if anyone is standing in front of the system logged on locally?
Thanks!
Task Manager
You can use task manager in RDP, click on users and it should give you a list of users logged into the machine (either via RDP or via the console).
In XP, it does not support someone being logged in at the local console and via RDP at the same time. So if you are in via RDP, you can rest assured no one else is logged in. I wasn't aware that you could run the Altiris PXE server on an XP box, that may potentially be your problem?
You may be right! Look at
You may be right! Look at page 20:

We were led to believe, or I mis-understood, that we could use XP for Package Server and PXE Imaging. This could be a significant problem!!
Actually....
We do have Altiris PXE services running on one of our WinXP package servers. I'm wondering if it's a timeout issue with the WAN, as the working system is just across town on a faster link than most.
I'll also check file & print sharing settings, firewall status, etc...
More Info
kb.altiris.com/article.asp
This KB, under the PXE section, indicates that XP is not supported. Has anyone seen documentation where XP is supported to run Altiris PXE services?
Someone suggested I copy the \DSSetup folder from our DS server to the WinXP box and try the install there.
Re: more info
That is correct XP is not supported to install a PXE server an error message states when attempting that.
yeah the suggestion to the previous post works :) Then read kb.altiris.com to open ports needed.
