Ghost Solution Suite

hi,

i updated from GSS 2 to 2.5 so i can image new machines that, evidently, require the use of windows PE.

but, most of my machines worked perfectly well with DOS UNDI driver. can i toggle back and forth from using the windows PE drivers to using the DOS UNDI driver with GSS 2.5?

if so, can someone point me in the direction of how to do this?

Hi,

I think you really mean if you could switch the preOS to use between WinPE and DOS.

If you want to select DOS as the preOS for all the new computers connect to Console, change it from Tools->Options. If you want to change the preOS for all the clients in the folder, right click the folder and select required preOS. You can change it for a single machine by double clicking the machine and going to client properties.

thanks for the reply.

the problem is that now that we've updated to GSS 2.5 when we try and re-image a machine that used to use the UNDI drivers and the re-imaging took place entirely in DOS things worked fine.

now that we are using 2.5 when the client restarts it does so in a psuedo-windows mode, it gets about 40% through the re-imaging and then it bombs-out with:

"The exception unknown software exception (XX) occured in the application location (XX)."

i then have to manually install the OS on the client to get it to boot.

Could you post the ghosterr.log for us please?

 If you can get the error file, it is very helpful. But with this exception, there may not be an error file.

If you use DOS instead of WinPE, does it work? If that's the case, how much memory does the client has?

it did when i was using GSS 2.

but, i don't know how to use DOS with GSS 2.5, it always defaults to WinPE. how can i toggle to DOS instead?

Anyways...

Try opening the image file with ghost explorer and see if you can get into it and let us know if you have any problems with that.

Now I'm not the best at reading these error logs, but by the looks of it, the ghost session started then asked for a file you could not find then it failed, is that correct?

If so then what happened was you are missing some files. The first one that it found is a .gho file. There looks to be two more that will be .ghs files with the same name but 001.ghs and 002.ghs at the end of them.

Also I suggest trying to make a new image and then ghost it back down onto that PC and see if that works. It shouldn't matter if the pre-OS is WinPE or DOS.

EDIT: Also I should point out that there are 3 live updates you need to install. Go to Ghost Explorer, under Help and go to Live Update.

"...interesting defect"? not exactly what you want your doctor to tell you when you go in for that CAT scan.  :)

i tried a different image file and it worked fine. so, i suspect the defect was with that particular image,

 Hi Mike,

That was an unexpected behaviour when looking for the spans - made me to say interesting ..

I don't think there is a problem with the image, but when Ghost name spans it adds a 3 digit index to the name. Depending on the way you create it, it may truncate the name to 5 characters too. If you have a image name 'Test', the spans would be Test001.ghs, Test002.ghs etc. If the name is "00000", it will look for 00000001.ghs for the span, which seems to be failing. You can try renaming the image (and spans) to a different name and most likely it will work, unless there is another issue.

By the way, I noticed that the build you are using is 2113. We released 3 live updates with many fixes, the current Ghost build is 2165. I strongly suggest you to run LU and update the system :-)

Edit: I just had a go with this, but the file name does not seem to be the issue as I thought first. It is more likely that the image has a problem.  I think I spoke too soon :-)
