    Hi NTC,

You're best off using a different forum fro Symantec Mail Security for MS Exchange questions: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/security/forums/domino

A good basic overview of how SMSMSE 6 works can be found at http://www.symantec.com/business/mail-security-for-microsoft-exchange

System requirements, data sheets, etc can be downloaded from there.

In brief: SMSMSE will protect the SMTP traffic passing through an Exchange server from viruses, spam, content filtering violations, and more.  It works very well with SEP or SAV on the same server.  Between documents on the site, the forums, or even a chat with Sales, I am confident you'll soon have all the info you need!

    Thanks and best regards,

    Mick

The answers to your questions are yes, yes, and yes.  Of course this is not the right forum for this ;-)

But SMS for Exchange is installed onto the mail server, frontend or edge/transport servers.

It scans all incoming, outgoing messages in realtime, does scheduled scans of the information store, and can enforce various compliance rules as well.  Some of the additional features are anti-spam as an option too.

Great product that I've used for more than 5 years.

Glad you found the info you needed, NTC, and many thanks for the input, teiva-boy!

Just a slight correction to my original post: SMSMSE scans the SMTP mail flow of the Exchange server, yes.  I forgot to mention that it can also scan Exchange's IS (Information Store).  So, if you use Exchange's foldering or have MS Outlook clients connecting with Exchange via a different method than SMTP, SMSMSE will still keep you protected.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Mick

There is some tool available like Sync Tool for this. This Scan Tool is really the neatest piece of the SUS FP.Even if you decide not to use the patch distribution at your site, there really is no reason not to use the Scan Tool in order to gather a complete inventory of the state of security hotfix distribution in your enterprise. Most of the problems that exist with the Scan Tool revolve around limitations with the MBSA that are being worked on. As you can see from the flow that was outlined above, much thought and development time have gone into the design of the Scan Tool and should provide as a valuable resource for any SMS site even if the distribution pieces of the SUS FP aren’t utilized.
