I want to fully encrypt a new 6TB hard drive in my Windows 7 64-bit tower. It is for data storage, not OS or bootup. Can I do it? What product -- exactly -- do I need to buy?

Some details: I had to format it using GPT (not MBR) for Windows to see the full 6 TB. I will be upgrading to Windows 10 when it comes out.

    Hi Subs99,

The product that you will need will be Symantec Encryption Desktop, however even the other product i.e Symantec Endpoint Encryption is covered under the same license agreement, it is not a concern.

About the 6Tb drive, is it a secondary drive within you Windows 7 machine or an external drive?

Because there is a Feature Request: Support for drives 2 TB in size or Larger with Symantec Drive Encryption (previously PGP Whole Disk Encryption)

Can you point me to where I can buy Symantec Encryption Desktop? I cannot find it on your site.

And just to be clear: you are saying that Symantec Encryption Desktop will encrypt this drive?

The 6TB drive is an internal drive. Are you saying I can not encrypt it using Symantec Drive Encryption?

I would say that according to the current feature request, Symantec Drive Encryption is unable to encrypt partitions or drives that are 2TB or larger, which is why their workaround is to create multiple 1.8 TB or less partitions.

If your 6TB drive needs to be one single volume and you need it encrypted and cannot wait until Symantec does address this issue (feature requests may or may not be accepted), you will unfortunately need to look for a different encryption product.

If you wish to try and get this FR accepted and implemented ASAP, then you will need to contact your Sales rep so that he can escalate the request internally after creating a husiness case which includes how many licenses of the product you have bought, how many other Symantec product licenses you have bought, and if this lack of functionality will delay a current project (include costs incurred for this delay, etc).

In your original response you mentioned 3 different products:

    1. Symantec Encryption Desktop
    2. Symantec Endpoint Encryption
    3. Symantec Drive Encryption

In your most recent response you only say that Symantec Drive Encryption cannot encrypt a full 6TB drive. What about the other 2 products you mentioned?

    Don't worry about the double-post Subs99,

Currently this is a limitation with all 3 of the products you mentioned.

Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11 currently has this limitation as well.
