  • 1.  How to get the real info for patch/updates for SAV 10.x

    Posted May 22, 2008 05:05 PM
I have inherited a few servers that I consult the management of, and they are running different versions of SAV Corporate or SMB. I am having trouble finding the correct patch files to get them up to the very latest version. for instance, I have a server and clients running version 10.0.2.2002. I went to http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=51852 and chose the options pertaining 10.0.2. The patch files that were there, when I download them, all say that I dont have the correct version installed or that the patch is not for my version of SAV.

    Specifically, I downloaded sav_10.0.2.2020_allwin_en.zip (3,865,657 bytes)

"Description:    This patch is for Symantec AntiVirus CD 10.0.2 Maintenance Release 2 (MR2) and it includes additional product updates, including the latest RAR decomposer that was originally released in Point Patch 1 (PP1). This patch can be migrated over Symantec AntiVirus 10.0.2.2000 (MR2), 10.0.2.2001 (MR2 PP1), and 10.0.2.2010 (MR2 MP1).  "

However, it does not install over 10.0.2.2002, saying ""The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a
different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

Is there an easy way to tell if I have 10.0.2.2002, what exactly I can upgrade to?

I also have systems on 10.1.5.5000,  and 10.1.0.396 at other offices and will need to be able to see what I can upgrade them to, although, their fileconnect status shows that 10.2 is available for download and I assume I can download that and it will upgrade.....hopefully......

    Thanks,
    John

I'm not sure if 10.2 is still for vista only, maybe some else can answer that.

One thing you'll have to check for is if you're running Symantec Antivirus or Symantec Client Security.  Symantec Client Security has a built in firewall with it.  If you're running 10.0.2.x of symantec client security and you download the 10.0.2.2020 patch for symantec antivirus (instead of the 10.0.2.2020it will give you that message when you try to install.

You can tell which version you're running by getting the version of the vpc.exe file (for clients)which should be in c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\ or c:\Program Files\Symantec Client Security.  On servers you can look in c:\Program Files\Sav.  The lastest current version of 10.1 is 10.1.7.7000.

If you're feeling lucky and have a lot of time you can go to Symantec Endpoint Protection, but this is a total upgrade and requires a lot of planning or else you'll have a lot of headaches.  If you're wanting to go that route I'd suggest looking at the forum at: https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board?board.id=endpoint_protection11.  Then do a lot of planning and a crapload of testing...  Then when you're finish testing, test some more...:smileywink:

I have deployed SEP 11, at another office, and there was one big problem with one workstation that required a lot of cleanup to get it back in order. Overall I like the product, though I have another (competition) that I am looking at as well and it seems to be less of an administrative hassle.

For another of the clients I support,  I am currently running Symantec Client Security 10.1.5.5000. The download said it was 10.2 on Fileconnect. However this is what installed. I will be at the site later today and will try to get patches for it, but I wish there was an easier way to determine whether these patches are even applicable before downloading and trying them out and seeing that error message.

OK so my version of VCP32.exe in c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\ at this particular client office is 10.1.5.5000. I go to  http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=51852 to see what is available to download. I am supposed to "select my product version" from the drop-down and it gives me several options in the 10.1 range:

    10.1
    10.1 MP1 (10.1.0.1)
    10.1 MR4 (10.1.4)
    10.1 MR4 MP1 (10.1.4.1)
    10.1 MR5 (10.1.5)
    10.1 MR5 MP1 (10.1.5.1)
    10.1 MR6 (10.1.6)
    10.1 MR6 MP1 (10.1.6.1)
    10.1 MR7 (10.1.7)

    Downloaded
    10.1 MR5 MP1 (10.1.5.1)
    10.1 MR6 (10.1.6)

Tried 10.1 MR5 MP1 (10.1.5.1) and lo and behold, it worked: I updated a client that was on 10.1.5.5000 to 10.1.5.5010. Restarted, and then tried the next one: 10.1 MR6 (10.1.6) and
10.1 MR6 MP1 (10.1.6.1) (both download the same file), which will not install on a system running either 10.1.5.5000 or 10.1.5.5010, using either the remote client installer, or the patch file run locally with interaction. The error message is the same, either the program is missing or the patch is for a different version. So this would tell me that I can not update this installation past 10.1.5.5010. Is that correct?

The 10.1.6.x should be a complete install instead of a patch.  You'll have to install that before running the mp1 patch if you're trying to install it over the 10.1.5.x version.

Hi asdf1234 (I like the random nick :smileyhappy:)

You are doing that incorrectly. SAV works on full build systems, let me try to explain:

You have SAV 10.0.2.X that is SAV 10 MR2. Over SAV 10 MR2 you can only apply patches, that is MR2 MP1 (10.0.2010) MR2MP2 (10.0.2020). Patches fix only a small number of issues.

If you want to set a corporate standard you need to move all your clients to SAV 10.1 MR7 (latest version). You have a valid upgrade path from all SAV 10 versions.

There is a document that explains you how to do that in the KB: Migrating to Symantec Antivirus 10.1

You can download the full build of SAV 10 MR7 from http://fileconnect.symantec.com using your serial number.

If you don't have it (as you inherited it from someone else and it's likely the paper is lost in a pile somewhere :smileyvery-happy:) you can contact customer service and they will be able to find it based on the company details.
