  • 1.  How to Get Rid of PGP After Failed Installation Attempt

    Posted May 11, 2015 06:07 PM

I have acquired a new macbook air running on Yosemite OSX 10.10.3 and the first software I installed was Sym Desktop E-mail Encryption 10.3.2 MP7. I have no data in the computer it so I have no issues in loosing info. After the installation and restart the laptop stopped working: it doesnt start nor I can get into safe mode; I get the prohibitive sign in every attempt. I have succesfully created a Yosemite boot disk in a USD drive and I am able to boot from it and reinstall Yosemite however after the installation is complete and the computer reboots it goes back to the prohibitive sign. PGP still hanging in there? Disk Utility does not find any issues with "verify disk". Ideas?

    Hi Mac,

For Mac OS X 10.10.3 - the supported version is Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2 MP8 (Build 16349), please refer to the below article.

Mac OS X and Supported Versions of Symantec Encryption Desktop (Formerly PGP Desktop)

About the uninstalation you can try Manually Remove Symantec Encryption Desktop using the below article, once you have re-installed OSX on the MAC,

Thank you. I figured that out later. Do you think a clean install of Yosemite would work? I have nothing on the computer and no problem in reformating drives. I have just downloaded and installed the pgp desktop, and the issue appeared after the restart. I have not created any disks or encrypted anthing.

It sounds like you have already attempted to re-install Yosemite.

Yes, one option would be to reformat the drive. Make sure you are NOT performing a "quick format" as that may not wipe the boot sector, where the PGP Bootguard is stored.

Additionally, if you are sure you have re-installed Yosemite, and bootguard is remaining, you may try a utility like FDISK to wipe the boot sector

Are you still experiencing this issue?  If so, try the following:

    1. Boot to the OS X installer.
    2. Open the terminal utility.
    3. Run the following command in terminal:
    fdisk -u /dev/disk0
    4. (optional) Repartition the drive several times, using different numbers of partitions (3-5 times with 10+ partitions each time) 5. Format the drive with the desired nmber of partitions.
    6. Install OS X or restore from backup.
    7. Boot the system.
    8. Update the system to the latest version of OS X if necessary.
    9. Reboot the system.
    10. Install Symantec Encryption Desktop.
    11. Reboot after installation completes.

You should not experience the circle with a slash. Steps 3&4 both are methods of clearing the instrumentation data, so I included the second as optional. It couldn't hurt to do both.

The problem is that certain encryption pointers in the boot sector remain even after a reformat.  Using fdisk to clear the boot partition or repartitioning the system will clear those pointers.
