  • 1.  How to manually update virus defs for Symantec Sharepoint

    Posted Dec 22, 2014 01:39 PM

I just downloaded the Symantec for Sharepoint trial version and the first thing it tells me when I go into Sharepoint Central Adminstration is that the Virus defs are out of date from Jun 2012 and the AV will be disabled in 90 minutes.  I have been unable to find instructions in any of the manuals or in the forums how to manually update the virus defs.  My target systems will not have internet connections and live update will not be used.  I need to manually update the product AV defs ( I do this already for my SEPM by dropping the jdb files in the correct directory).  I have not been able to find anything that points to setting up the live update, let alone manual updates.  Please point me in the right direction.    I will need to manually update, and I will need to disable live updates.

    Sahrepoint 2013

    Thanks,

You need to select scan engine 5.x

Thanks for the suggestions.  But Running Intelligent Updater doesn't seem to work.

I first ran the 7.x version, and that updated my SEPM client's dat file on the box, but did not appear to affect the Symantec for Sharepoint.

Then I downloaded the 5.x version as the 2nd comment suggested.  That runs, appears that it is updating something (with dat files unzipping, etc), but when it ends it pops up a message box stating "A Symantec product containing virus protection was found and was updated.  This product uses the latest engine and virus definition system availalbe.  However, if you have other older symantec products, in addtion to those detected, you must run Intelligent Updater version 2 to update thier virus protection".  No log file appears in %temp%, and going into Sharepoint Central Admin and clicking on the symantec link still shows the June 2013 version of dat files.   So any further advice?

    Thanks,

    Dave

After looking into this further, it appears you can only get updates via Symantec LiveUpdate (not feasible in your case) or via LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA).

May want to have a look thru the admin guide but I don't see anything that allows for updating Symantec for Sharepoint manually:

Ok, I installed LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA) - I then created a product for Symantec Protection Engine 7.0 (even though the Symantec for Sharepoint looks like it installed Engine 6.0 as there were no selections for 6.0).

But I cannot determine how to configure it to grab an update that I manually put on the system.  How do you set the source server as the current local server and directory?  And then what update do you need to download, and where to put it?  Then how do you tell LUA to distribute this to my Sharepoint Heads?

According to the LUA manual, I should be able to "Designate a source server (optional) from which to download updates.", but I put in my local server, and a file share set up there, but it doesn't let me select a subdirectory - is UNC the correct protocol for a direct file access?  I am not sure I am doing this right, but can't tell from the manual how to set it up?  Any further assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks again
