Wow, currently I have 32 ...
Mostly those are inherited from previous admins at my company though.
I've actually shaved that number down from something higher.
Still working on lowering it, just waiting for some stuff to expire.

27!

We typically have a separate pool for each company we support, and each retention level. Probably overkill, but it works.

I thought I'd contribute more results...

We operate 3 different NetBackup enviornments.

First one we have 36 volume pools

Second we have 11 volume pools

Third we have 8 volume pools.

We have 9 that we use for production and a couple other for testing only.

If possible, I like to have a volume pool created for each media server. The reasoning is that it makes it easier to match a tape with it's server. Media servers cannot share tapes so I see no negative impact.

Wow cool stuff, thanks for all the input.

I have two one for the master and one for the media.

The master runs the Netbackup one and the media runs the Oracle one, oracle does not play well with others (archives and all).

I found that having too many Pools makes a lot of work for the admin, I try to let Netbackup do all the managment of the tapes.

Here is a little story for you.

In the past I have worked at places that have had "many pools" configured. I have also seen 1 policy for each client and in some cases 1 policy for each schedual for each client, the most pools I have seen is 97, this equates to 1 pool for every schedual, this was; needless to say very very hard to manage, this particular company had a person hired just to manage the tapes, he did not manage Netbackup, his job was to just move tapes within the system, crazy!

Sorry I could not give more points.

I only use the NetBackup volume pool for my catalog tapes.
Every new tape goes into the scratch pool.
When it is needed it goes into whatever pool calls for it.
When it expires it goes back into the scratch pool and is available for whatever pool may need another tape.
I just make sure there is plenty of tapes in the scratch pool.
What admin work is being done for the media?

i have 26 pools (never counted them before).
I err on the side of managable admin, too few pools isn't easy on the eye/brain, too many is too heavy on the spine ie too much admin work.
I still don't like Veritas's scratch pool feature as it moves non-robotic tapes into the scratch pool - which to me is absolutely pointless and confusing - i only want a scratch pool full of usable tapes; a tape in a scratch pool is no good to man nor beast if it's physically 30miles away or whatever :)

That's why I usually filter my media viewing to what's currently in the robot ...
Then you're not seeing all that extra stuff that's not in there (which it doesn't really matter what VP it's in if it isn't in the robot!) ...

Ihave 3 volume pools. here is a link to an article that I fournd interesting it is a bit old but still valid. I use the same pool across libraries and media servers but use a different starting tape id since i do not mix tapes between libraries.

I have a reference to another if I find it.

Here in Atlanta (not counting the PHX or HOU sites):

22 policies

almost 30 volume pools

All but about 8 of those volume pools will be gone within the next year though (also waiting on media to expire). Only been here 4 weeks and I've cut down their policy count by almost half, and their volume pools by not quite a third...........I'll get this place cleaned up eventually.... ;)

Yep I started with over a dozen pools and about 30 policies. Now about 8 policies and 3 pools. I have two different tape lables excluding cleaning tapes. There were 6 different tape labels. My second site was crazier.

Hi, just to share some thoughts for those with Oracle database backup. I've created separate pool for Oracle database and ArchiveLog backup to guard against media failure during restoration. Therefore in the event of media failure during db backup restoration, at least the database is recoverable by rolling forward using the restored archive logs.

It is on my To-Do list to reduce our number of volume pools and accelerate our recycling schedule ...
but it's going to be tough since we use the infinite retention levels quite often in many of our policies.
