How to move clients from one Altiris server into another

Created: 22 Jan 2013 | 1 comment

Hello all,

I inherit an Altiris installation for a customer I am working with. Their environment is based on VMWare, DELL Servers, Windows 2008 Server R2, no LINUX or UNIX systems.

The issue that I am having right now is the migration or move of some clients from one Altiris server into another one. What I am trying to do is to "move" some of the clients from Server A to Server B, and remove those from Server A.

+ Both servers are running the same version of Altiris

+ All physical servers are running the DELL Management Console

I was able to re-discover the subnets that I want to move into server B, and I am able to see the list of computers and servers, but none are updated, I cannot run an inventory or deploy the inventory agent.

Do you know about a procedure or guidelines that I can use in order to acomplish this?

Thank you very much in advance.

The easiest way is to use the targeted agent settings. Go to Settings > agents/Plug-ins > Symantec Management Agent. Create a new policy and set the target in the applies to section to contain only those machines you want to migrate. Then check the box for the alternate url for accessing NS and add the server name you want to migrate to. Only enable that policy once you have removed the computers you want to migrate from the other policies targets. Remember that every agent should only get one of these policies. Once you have it set up the agents will migrate to the new server once they check in and get the new policy.
