I've been loading software purchase history into the contract management module for 5 years now and we're slowly working thru a process to get everyone off the old versions of our more popular apps and on the most current version. Our Altiris administrator is gung ho to get rid of all but the most recent upgrade purchase records, all but the most recent Win32 record, note this history in the Comment section in the remaining Win32 record. He says this is what folks at ManageFusion were saying they were doing.

All my research and training tells me to keep all the critical path records; showing the initial purchases thru all applicable upgrades, which means saving purchase records (from as far back as pre-2000) and several different Win32 records. I have started to get rid of purchases that have died a natural death; a version/edition purchase was never upgraded, is no longer installed, and there's no plan to reinstall it but I'm not sure if even deleting these is a good thing.

How are you all addressing these history, compliance, storage situations?

I also am very interested in knowing how other organizations are tracking their historical software licensing/purchasing data.
