Does Anyone know how NBU determines drive status.

There are two ways how a drive status will be determined:

1. tpconfig - which determines from the physical connectivity perspective
2. vmoprcmd - which determines from NB database perspective

Some earlier versions of NetBackup would down the drive on all media servers sharing the drive.

VERITAS ain't it the truth?

I think NetBackup pools drive status physically using SCSI request or something like that

Does anyone know exactly how NBU query physical drive status ( in NBU 6.x) ?

While doing regular backup job, NBU recognizes what drive tells in his reply.

Check this article:

DOCUMENTATION: How Veritas NetBackup 6.x (tm) determines if a tape should be frozen or the status of a tape drive should be changed to down, and how to change this behavior:

NetBackup also supports TapeAlert interface, have a look into System Administrator's Guide, voIume 2, "Reference topics", Tape Alert
