  • 1.  How to PXE Boot BartPE or other ISO's in DS 6.9 SP5?

    Posted Jun 24, 2011 07:54 PM

I have seen a few articles about booting BartPE or other ISO's using Altiris PXE server.  These seem outdated and no longer applicable.  Specifically in this article:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO4409  Unfortunately, this article does not seem to apply anymore.  For example, there is no longer any WinPE.iso file under .\PXE\MasterImage\MenuOptionXXX

I have been struggling with this for far too long now, and was hoping someone might have done this already?  If so, and you can supply some detailed directions, I would greatly appreciate it.

In DS 6.9 you could still create a user created PXE image. U could still use the winpe.iso as long as the PXE files you have contain the .0 file.  So look into creating WInPE images for WAIK 1.2? is that right it was the first version of WinPE.

    Good Luck,

What you are saying does not make much sense, and is not very clear.

Yes you can create an "Other" PXE configuration.  When you PXE boot, this is not shown as an option.  Very frustrating.

If you have any solution, please try to give detail of the solution.  WAIK 1.2?  We are at version 2.1, just like everyone else that would be using DS 6.9.

I assumed you knew what files are needed to PXE boot a .iso versus a .wim.

I dont have a solution other that importing a user defined PXE image could be used to accomplish what your are looking for

The Windows Automated Installation Kit provides you with the WinPE source and all the tools you need to create a customised version of WinPE. You can then create an ISO of this if you need one for PXE booting.

This Connect article can get you started: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/readyadventures-winpe

    EdT,

Thank you for the article.  I quickly glanced it over, and remember reading it in the past.  Once I sit down to digest it, I think it might help.  The main problem I am having is, as the article mentions, a boot.wim file is required.  I have a .ISO file that I cannot set PXE to boot from.  I tried using ImageX to convert my custom ISO to WIM, which worked fine.  I even renamed it to boot.wim.  Unfortunately, it did not work.

Thanks again for the article link, hopefully that will help.

If your ISO file is a WinPE bootable image, then you don't need to convert it to a WIM. Just mount the iso using a virtual machine or one of the many virtual CD utilities such as Daemon tools, and find the wim file in the iso, then copy it to wherever you need to run it from.

On the other hand, if the iso is not a WinPE boot image, then I very much doubt that converting it to a wim would achieve anything useable.

I will have to check.  This is a straight BartPE ISO made with Bart's PEBuilder.  In VMWare I can mount the ISO just fine, and boot off it.  I just want to make it into a PXE option.

I read over the article a little more.  It seems to instruct me on how to create a WinPE boot disk.  I understand that and can do that already in DS 6.9 SP5.

I am looking to make the BartPE ISO, which does not have any .WIM file inside it, PXE bootable.
