  • 1.  How to re-run software updates with status "Failed to Install"?

    Posted Mar 17, 2016 07:22 AM

I have a computer which has failed to install some windows updates.  They are listed under the "Software Updates" tab of the Management Agent with a status of "Failed to Install".  The number of retries has reached the maximum number specified in the "Software Update Plug-in Policy" (currently 3).

If I can resolve the issue causing these updates to fail to install, how can I get these failed tasks to try to install again?

    Many thanks.

    Hi leroo,

Agent should perform installation on next scheduled day/time

By default on next day @03:00 and will try to install previously failed installations.

You can increase reinstallation attemtps in "Default Software Update Plug-in Policy"

Or you can temporary clone "Default Software Update Plug-in Policy" policy via mouse right click menu -> "Clone

    • set there earlier time to perform patch installation and
    • assign it only on required client computers where previous patch installation was failed.

Note: Don't forget to delete this cloned "Default Software Update Plug-in Policy" policy to avoid further unnecessary attempts of patch installation on assigned client computers!

Hi Igor - thanks for the information.  I will keep one eye on this computer and see what happens.

Hello Ieroo -   did the patches in question complete installation on the next scheduled cycle?

If there are still some patches waiting please list those patch numbers,  there may be a rules issue or a corruption with the download in which case I would suggest updating your vendor list on the PMImport, redownloading the update(s) and placing them in a new policy to push out on your next cycle.

Hi Christina_ - Sorry for the late response, but yes it seems that the updates that are listed as "Failed to Install" are retried and successful at the next scheduled cycle.

I think the computer in question had got a little bit mixed up as it seemed to be grabbing updates from a WSUS at the same time as SPM.

I did notice that it would not install all updates in one attempt - one day it would install some patches then not install anymore until after a reboot.  Is this normal for SPM?

    Hi Leroo,

This can be normal it all depends on your DSUP and environment.

For example: Why is it failing (too many task running at once or because another patch is needed as a prerequisite or waiting on a restart for that prerequisite to complete install…).  What is the install window you are allowing?  Is there a maintenance window restriction?  Are the machines turned on the whole window? …..
