Hi All,

How to recover the catalog without a DR file ?

Which below link to use:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO72928#v62300149

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO72613&profileURL=https%3A%2F%2Fsymaccount-profile.symantec.com%2FSSO%2Findex.jsp%3FssoID%3D13912389472715h8NgVz2725RQqKug1EXWm8c09kAGQF8SZL1T

1 What is the difference between both the links.

2. catalog recovery when image database is in tact and when image database is not in tact. What is the difference in these two?

I would use this link.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

The first link is only an example of a DR file email.

For 2.  The difference is that either the catalog image database is 'undamaged' or damaged.

Is this a real problem or just a question

Thanks Martin.

When image database is in tact.

There is a line that tir expiraion shud be greatrer than 0.Open that image file.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

4. Open the most recent header file in a text editor.  Note the "client type" and "tir_expiration" lines in the below example:
CLIENT_TYPE 35
PARENT_IMAGE_ID Catalog_1147351340_FULL
TIR_INFO 2
TIR_EXPIRATION 1147437824

Look for CLIENT_TYPE "35" and a TIR_EXPIRATION value greater than "0".  If the client type is not 35, or TIR_EXPIRATION is 0, open the next most recent header file.  Continue the process until a client type of 35 and tir expiration > 0 is seen.

What this tir expiration > 0 means?

It means tir is greater than 0. Surely you can see and understand that?

You have not answered Martin's question:

Is this a real problem or just a question?

It's a question ... fairly sure of that ,,,

TIR is true image recovery - required for catalog backups, so this will just be a way of chacking you have a valid file, far as I can see.

Looking in one of my valid DR files :

TIR_EXPIRATION 1390337299

which is not 0, so matches the TN.

Thanks Martin.One last query.

1  I need to do catalog recovery. Can i use recovery without import option?

2  Is it correct that in "RECOVERY WITHOUT IMPORT " option we dont need to run CATALOG wizard?

Marianne's picture

You need to tell us more about what exactly it is that you need to do.

Recovery Without Import means you have 2 Master servers that are both up and running.
Master1 have images that you want to restore on Master2.
Images from Master1 are then copied to Master2 and tapes are taken to Master2 and put into a pool that is not used for backups to prevent media from being overwritten.
Additional steps are needed as from NBU 7.5 onwards.

If you have REAL requirements/issues, it is always best to start with your real requirements in your opening post.

Recovery Without Import needs network connectivity between master servers in order to copy image folders.

If there is no network connectivity, you need to backup or copy catalogs to removable media to take to DR server. In tha case, you may as well do catalog backup and recovery.

Recovery without Import does not involve the Catalog wizard.

Before NBU 7.5, this White Paper can be used:
http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/products/White_Papers/Data_Protection/nbu_wp_replicatingbucatalogs_103003.pdf

As from 7.5, use this doc:

Point to note that recovery without import only allows restores to be run.  You would be unable to backup to the tapes, or more accurately, unable to backup to the tapes that contain the images that are found in the 'recovery without import catalog data that was moved across'.

Hi Marianne,Sorry for clearing the solution.

NBU 6.5 to NBU 7.1

I am performing the DR.We have connectivity with the server.i have copied /db/images/masterserver name folder from prod server to DR server.

I am following below doc:

Before NBU 7.5, this White Paper can be used:
http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/products/White_Papers/Data_Protection/nbu_wp_replicatingbucatalogs_10

Now how to do catalog recovery on DR server?

WE have tapes also from prod server to DR server on a different pool( pool name is restore) and all tapes are write protected.

Catalog Recovery  and Recovery without Import are 2 different concepts.

You choose which one suits your environment.

When you choose Recovery without Import, you don't perform catalog recovery because all images have already been copied from Production master and you don't want to use tapes from Production master for backups on DR master.
I believe this concept is covered in the White Paper, right?

SOLUTION

Yes this is covered.

So i have copied the folder. Please suggest me how to go further on this.

We have 3 more hours left for the activity.

The White Paper contains all info necessary to copy images across, add FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER entry and then browse for images...

I honestly do not understand what else you need...
