How to resolve name resolution?

Created: 25 Dec 2012 • Updated: 03 Jan 2013 | 11 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

One of my DB Redolog is failing with status 6.

It was running fine for last couple months and started failing from last two days.

There was no changes made as per my knowledge on client/media/master server.

I verified the name resolution from client and master as suggested in this link

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

I found two descripencies

1)bpclntcmd -pn from client

It is displaying two names

a)old client name along (client old domain name) b)along with the correct name

2)bpclntcmd -ip <client ip adress> from master server is giving oldclientname(client old domain name)

how to and where to change these.

Thankyou inadvnace..

hi,

netbackup always looks from the DNS or from /etc/hosts file

you make sure that your /etc/hosts file does not have the 2 names mapped... even if you have DNS.. that is also..

1)run this in Client and master server.

grep <client IP> /etc/hosts

grep <hostname> /etc/hosts

nslookup  <client IP>

nslookup <hostname>

if etc/hosts showing duplicate entires.. remove the unnecessory entry.

if DNS showing duplicate entires... ask your DNS admin to correct it.

as you are  saying there is no chages in client/media/master server.,  why suddenly name resolution become an issue?

may be correcting the name resolution can answer this...

did you see the log in dbclient, what it is tying to say?

Thank you Nagalla for the quick help and response.

Looks DNS Issue.

nslookup  <client IP> from master and media - giving wrong name

nslookup <client ip> from client is working fine.

client OS-Windows

Master/Media-AIX

Do i need to contact Unix/Intel to resove this issue.

Thanks again..

Also I see dbclient log as empty...Nothing was logged inside..

hi Sri Vani,

do you fine any entries in /etc/hosts of the master and media server..?

the reason for asking this is.. there may be a corret name in /etc/hosts to give the correct info..

if there is no eitires in /etc/hosts of master and media server you can make those enitires for timebeing untill your DNS admin( may be unix and windows admin) to correct it in DNS.

hope this will resolve your name resolution issue..

and comming to the DB failures?

does the backup is triggering by Netbackup master or from the Client side?

other than EC 6 do you find any errors?

what is the detail status of the failed job?

Hi Nag ,

Need correction in/etc/hosts/ and DNS as well.

I ve no permissions to edit /etc/hosts .I will work with my Unix and intel and resolve this name resolution issue.

Thank you Nag..

Go and talk with the DNS admin right away. Something is not right here - DNS names must be the same throughout a organization.

Meanwhile you could try:

ipconfig -flushdns (Windows CMD)

or

bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache

To see if the issus is a local DNS caching issue on the master server.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

Thq Nicolai..

ipconfig -flushdns (Windows CMD)

or

bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache

These two dint resolve the issue..
RamNagalla's picture

Sri Vani,

fix the IP resolution issue... once that is done we can test the backup again.. it would help to narrow down the issue...

lets see how it behaives after fixing the IP resolution issue...

from the above job detai log i understand that the media server is connected to the client and after that it got failed , it may be because of the name resolution or something els..

so let the IP resolution issue resolve and see how it moves..

This is a separate issue that needs to be resolved by dba:

BR0301W SQL error -1041 at location BrDbConnect-2, SQL statement:
'CONNECT /'
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
BR0310W Connect to database instance SPP failed

If you Google 'ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist' you will find discussions on Oracle forums. Nothing to do with NBU...
