  • 1.  How to resolve the "Unknown Key" error presented in File Share Encryption?

    Posted Nov 23, 2014 04:45 PM

    Hi,

I encrypted a file using the Symantec Encryption Desktop - File Share Encryption and by mistake a deleted the key that is assigned to an encrypted file that I'm using for tests.. Now, if I go to "File Share Encryption" I can't remove it the file from there.. it says the message that is presented below in the image:

If I don't have the key how can I remove this folder or re-assign a new key to it?

    Thanks,

    Carlos

    Hi Carlos,

We cannot re-assign a new key as there is only one key which the folder was encrypted and that key is now missing or deleted.

We can just delete the whole encrypted folder if we don't want the data. If we want the data then we need the private key. We can check the pgp folder in documents folder to see if we can retreive the private key from backup keyring files.

We should be able to delete the folder if we no longer want to use this encrypted folder.

    Hi Merc218,

You can re-encrypt the folder using command prompt, and add or remove the keys.

Please check the below article that talk about the same issue, hope this helps.
