Backup Exec 10.1 5629

I have failed removable media.  I have recovered all the back up files from this media with data recovery software and moved it to a new temporary removable media device.    What I am needing to restore from this media, is the sysvol and cert server files so I had to :

  1. Create a temporary install of backup exec
  2. Copy the data folder and catalogs to the temp install
  3. now I have the removable media plugged into this temporary installation

The Media shows up in Online Media and my Back-Up-To-Disk folder as "Unrecognized Media" and the Media set is "Retired" -- when I attempt to restore, "Invalid Physical volume Library Media Identifier"  -- e0008105 is given.

as suggested;

  1. I have attempted to Inventory the device
  2. attempted to specifically identify the device in the restore wizard
  3. attempted to restore by right-clicking on the .bkf file.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael, The link below

Hi Michael,

The link below should help you with the error you are experiencing:

Thanks! but no avail...

Thanks Craig!  Yes, That is the document (or a similar document to what I have attempted).  The inventory process completes successfully, but still the same error when I attempt a restore.  Additionally, I think I read that it might need to be re-cataloged after the inventory.  When I attempt to catalog from the back-up-to-disk device, I receive an Error:

The job failed with the following error.  Physical Library Device Not Found.--

Followed by

The drive hardware is offline. Please confirm that the drive hardware is powered on and properly cabled.

Thanks!

Hi Michael, What happens when

Hi Michael,

What happens when you browse the B2D folder in BE, and then catalog the *.bkf file/s themselves?

Here is a tech note to back it up...

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285326.htm <-- old, but could still be relevant.

Catalog the B2D media and not the B2D folder

I read that one last night and that's exactly what is happening.  However, I am not sure what it is wanting when it says "Catalog the B2D media and not the B2D folder" -- I don't get the catalog option when I go to the media, only inventory and scan.  I assume it's wanting me to do this in the Devices Tab under in my case "Backup-to-Disk Device 1."

I can browse the folder just fine and inventory it no problem.  so I think the above referenced article might be at least part of the issue.

RE: Catalog the B2D media and not the B2D folder

I beleive that what it is saying is that you cannot catalog the B2D folder as a whole, but must catalog each BKF file separately

(Think of the folder as a tape drive/library and each BKF file as a tape volume.  You inventory the drive, but catalog the tape)

I think it is because you

I think it is because you copied the data and catalog directory to your temp install.

1) do a fresh install of BE (Do not copy over the data and catalog directory) or put back the data and catalog directory from your previous fresh install, if you still have them.. .

2) in this copy of BE, create a B2D folder

3) copy the necessary .bkf files into this folder

4) in the Devices tab, right-click and inventory the whole B2D folder

5) go to the Media tab, you should see the .bkf files under All Media.  Right-click and catalog these .bkf files.

6) you should then be able to restore from them.

Tried this.  when i go to All media, and catalog, I get:

Decided to try and isolate

Decided to try and isolate the problem to the device itself, and created a backup folder on the local hard drive. It inventoried just fine, but when I attempt to catalog it, it remains in a queued state... it does occasionally flash to loading media and bounces back-and-forth.

RE: Decided to try and isolate

I seem to remember that at one point you cound not catalog an entire B2D folder at one pass, you had to catalog each BKF file separately

Try that

Hmm You have inventoried all

Hmm

You have inventoried all the BKF files, first, right?

Have you tried cataloging the oldest first.  I'm thinking that maybe BackupExec sees the file you are trying to catalog  as the nth in a "family"of BKF files and wants the first before any following files

yes, inventoried

yes, inventoried successfully

I can try that, I assume they're ordered sequentially with the lowest number being 1?

A couple of other things to note.

in the Devices and Media Tab,

Media Description = (Unrecognized Media)
Media Set = Retired Media

Another Interesting Note...

maybe this is typical, but... If I browse the windows media with explorer, I see all the files sequentially 1,2,3...  through BE devices, files are skipped  0001, 00005, 00007, 00008, 000010, etc.

This means that you have

This means that you have retired and deleted the missing files from BE, but did not physically delete them from your media server.
