How to restore from tapes with Storage Lifecycle policy?

Hi,

NetBackup 7.0.1 on solaris 10

I have a storage lifecycle policy that backs up first to VTL and then do duplication to the tape library. Now I need to test a SOX restore which requires to restore from tapes. However, since the VTL still has the backups, Symantec backup and restore seems to only give me the option to restore from VTL. How do I tell it to restore from tapes?

The method that seems to be easiest for bulk-restore from duplicate copy is this method described in TECH64592:

 

3.  If you have several images you wish to restore from alternate copies (for example in a disaster recovery situation), it is quicker to create the file ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER, which only contains the number of the copy you want to use. Once the file is in place, use the BAR GUI as normal, and it will use the copy number stored in this file.
 
On Unix:
1. Create the following text file on the Master Server.
/usr/openv/netbackup/ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER
2. Enter the copy number to use as a single line of text within this file.
 
 
On Windows:
To restore using the NetBackup Administration console:
1. Create the following text file on the Master Server.
<install_dir>\VERITAS\NetBackup\ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER
2. Enter the copy number to use as a single line of text within this file.
3. Remove the ".txt" extension from the file
 
Note: Be sure to remove or rename the ALT_RESTORE_COPY_NUMBER file once the restore has completed. Failure to do this will result in the backup copy number listed in this file being used for all future restores. This can result in failures when the copy number does not exist or is not available for restore.

Also, when using this final option, if you attempt to preview which tape is required through the GUI, it will still show the primary copy's Media ID, however when the restore actually takes place it will request the tape containing the copy number specified.

As per your SLP policy the

As per your SLP policy the images on VTL would be your primary copy till the retention period defined on SLP policy. If you want to restore from the tape then change the tape image to primary.

By default your first copy is always a primary copy and will be used for restore as it will be readily available. Once the primary copy is expired, 2nd copy will be automatically available for restore.If you want to restore from your other copies to test then you have to prompt them to primary copy. This can be easily done from the catalog tab.

thanks for the prompt reply but I am not sure what you meant by :

If you want to restore from your other copies to test then you have to prompt them to primary copy. This can be easily done from the catalog tab.

I searched around but am still not sure how to prompt it to the primary copy. Did you refer to there is a catalog tab in BAR or the "catalog" on the left expandable tree?
