How to (right) use the vendors and software list? (Windows Patch)

Hello,

I would like to know which is the best manner of manage the vendors and software list under "Import Patch Data for Windows" task. Actually we need to solve 2 problems:

1) How to disable the automatic check (checkmark) of new products in this list. We only have 108 checked items (of about 1372 items available today), basically for Adobe Reader and Acrobat and Microsoft Windows 7/Office 2010. This is the software we have installed locally in our machines so it can be patched. The rest of our software is "installed" using Virtual Applications so we update it changing the layers in the machine. No need to have it checked in this list (like Google Chrome, Mozilla Thunderbird, Adobe Flash and so on).

Disclaimer: we would like to maintain checked only the products we use and need to patch because we're guessing that this affects to the time this tasks needs to be completed (more products = more time) and this affects too to the size of the SQL database (more info, patches, etc. for products we don't use). Is this the right way of do this?

2) How to know which product we need to check to have a patch available in the Remediation Center. For example, we want to install the patches for a Microsoft Security Bulletin, MS13-xxx, but we don't see it in the available software bulletins list so we can't download nor distribute packages. As a test, if we check all products for Microsoft vendor and run the Import Patch Data task again, then the bulletin appears "magically" ;-) in the list and we can distribute it. But this will affect performance/time because a lot of non used products details will be downloaded. We've investigated if we can guess the necessary product to be checked by the files under C:\Program Files\Altiris\Patch Management\Import but we haven't had any luck.

Any help, tips, etc. would be very appreciated.

This is known issue and probably current behaviour of automatic selection of new products will be changed in the future releases. Most likely new product will be selected automatically ONLY if full vendor has been selected before Patch Data import task(full vendor means all products for this vendor)

2) How to know which product we need to check to have a patch available in the Remediation Center.

As I have mentioned before (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how...) there is no straightway method. I may advice to search for this information on vendor pages related to required updates.
