How to run a scheduled backup job manually/outside of schedule
Updated: 17 Jun 2010 | 6 comments
I have created a backup policy and applied it to a machine, I am wondering what I would do in order to manually run the job? Say I wanted to create a new full backup during the day, how would I do this?

If you wanted to manually
If you wanted to manually create a new full backup you would need to create and apply a policy for 'Independent Recovery Point'.

So is there no way to run a backup - say the server missed it's backup for whatever reason, is there no way to manually run it? I am thinking specifically of nightly incrementals if say Tuesday's incremental backup was missed (Server BSOD, lets say) then in the morning I would like to be able to run the missed backup job, is this possible?
You can do this from each
You can do this from each client locally by right-clicking on the system tray and choosing 'Run Backup Now'.
I'm not sure you can do this from BESR-MS though.

Chris,
So Symantec have really thought this one out - lets give our customers a central MANAGEMENT console but not give them the ability to centrally run a backup........ So if one night an ESX server fails that had say 50 virtual machines I would have to manually log on to each one and run the backup job individually?

There *might* be a way of doing this but I haven't found it yet. I'll post back if I find a way of doing this from the managment console...

I'm pretty sure this can't be done (BESR-MS is fairly new to me as well by the way).
The idea of a central management console is to 'push out' a backup policy to x number of clients. If you had a 'run now' option for a policy, it would run the backup on ALL clients that are applied to the policy.
As I said before, you can manually run a full backup by creating and applying a policy for an independent recovery point set. I can see in the scenario you have given, this could potentially be a problem and require quite a bit of work on the part of the backup admin.
All I can suggest is that you submit an enhancement request for this functionality to be included in future versions.
