How to set up backup job with overwrite on B2D

Created: 12 Sep 2013 | 2 comments

Hello everyone,

We have a backup job that stores data on B2D folder. At the job settings there is a keep for option that is set up to 1 hour. The backup works fine but afte "some" time there is no any data on the B2D folder. However I would like it to be overwritten. I suppose that the backup is removed after the 1 hour period. Is there any way to set up the backup job without the keep for option only with recommendation that the data should be overwritten? What's the best practise for?

Hi,

Never append to your B2D. You need to set this to overwrite.

But...if you don't have any data in the B2D folder, then it means it is being overwritten anyway, or at least returned to the scratch set.

Thanks!

BE 2012 will not let you append on B2D and as such does not give you an option to choose overwrite as it is the ONLY setting.

Also as it does not manage B2D data using media sets (unless RDX is being used) DLM reclaims the data in the background (every 4 hours it searches for expired media and removesit) . This means it is not really an overwrite which only happens when a job is running, it is a deletion (known as a reclaim) which happens throughout the day as expired media that does not have dependents and is not the last copy of a set of data is identified.

When media expires is controlled by what retention you set in the job.
