You can't.  The SEPM console can only deploy, not remove.  Same as it was with SSC for SAV.

There must be a way to tell it not to be deployed in the first place.  When I initially deployed the client using the default sylink.xml the Network Threat Detection option wasn't displayed.

It wasn't until I copied a new sylink.xml from my managemenet server to the client install directory that the option appeared.

There are several different ways of deploying SEP, using SEPM.

    1)  Using the deployment wizard.  I didn't care much for this option, as I didn't feel that it gave me enough control over the process, although the manuals seem to favor this method.

    2)  You can create a package and export it.  This way allows you to use 3rd party products to deploy.

    3)  My choice is the find unmanaged tool in the clients section of SEPM.  After configuring my deployment policies/templates the exact way that I wanted hem, I found this to give me the most control over what gets installed where.

    4)  There also seems to be some method of configuring specific packages to be linked to client groups, but I haven't looked much into that yet as #3 has worked fine for me.

It is possble to disable it via the Clients screen.  However it just re-enables itself after a reboot.

Ideally the entry should be gone from the client altogether.  At the very least I'd like it permanent disabled until I decide to use it.

This begs the question what is it's behavior when it is installed but has no Firewall or ID policies applied to it.  Does it do anything?  Consume any resources?

I, like you, won't be using the deployment wizard often.  My new deployments are done through group policy. So I need a way of removing the Threat Detection either at the MSI package level or within policies, or both.

Again, I know it's possible since the default sylink.xml for unmanaged clients doesn't install it at all and it never appears in the client.

Oddly, on two clients in a group with a set of policies the Network Threat Protection is gone from the client dashboard.

When I initially installed the client using an exported client install package with only the "Antivirus, Antispyware and Proactive Threat Detection" options the Network Threat Protection was in the client dashboard.  The client in question appeared in the Temporary group.  After I moved it over to the proper group the Network Threat Detiection dissapeared from the dashboard.

I have another client in another group (which I used the same options for the exported client to install)  with nearly the same policy settings but it appears in the dashboard and I cannot for the life of me figure out what policy setting (since that seems to be what's controlling it)  is different between the two policies.

    Frustrating!

When I replied to the thread watch somehow my replies got put in this thread.

    Jay,
It's been my experience that whatever components are showing in the client console are the components that are installed.

If a component is mysteriously appearing or disappearing that you don't want installed or need installed, check the Install Packages tab of the group the client is in. If an install package is present check to see if it contains only the feature or features you want, or delete it.

It sound like you have an install package assigned to one of your groups.
