How to Uninstall/Reinstall BE 11D CMS 7170

Kenneth Sheppard's picture
I cannot start the main CMS service without getting an 8120 start error.  My thought is to completely uninstall my CMS and CPA and then reinstall.  I was running 11D 6235 and CPS worked perfectly.  But when I upgraded last night to 7170, my perfectly working install, will no longer start.  I know that if I uninistall, I will loose my snapshots and history, but at this point, I see no other option.

Should I unistall the agents first or the main CMS?  I guess a PDF would be great, but I couldn't find any documentation on this topic.

Thanks.

You might want to try a repair install first.  If you do go with the reinstall, you will NOT have to uninstall the clients.

Thanks for your reply, Steve.  I did actually already try the repair route twice.  The repair does complete "successfully" but it does not allow me the start the service following the reboot.

Tell me, if I do uninstall my CMS and reinstall, should I delete the protected data that's been archived to my Backup Destination folders?  I know that once I perform the uninstall, I'll lose my snapshots and history, anyway.

Hi Kenneth,

I would suggest you run a Backup Exec backup of the protected data in your Destination Folders, then uninstall and reinstall CMS before running a restore of the backed up protected data "back to the Destination Folders".

Thanks for your reply, Christiane.  I was able to get the CPM services to start correctly.

I am wanting to remove some data that's currently on my CPM server and within my Backup Destinations.  This is data that I no longer need protected and I've removed this share data from my CPS job.  However, the data still resides under my Back Destination folder.  Is it safe to simply browse to this folder via Windows Explorer and delete the data?

Thanks again.

Hi Kenneth,

I think you will find the answer in the technote 285205 -    'How to delete Backup destination in Continuous Protection Server (CPS)" (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285205.htm) under "Options".
