Currently, We have 9 Lotus Domino servers on R 6.5, and they are protected by Symantec Mail Security for Domino version 4.1 (SMSDOM 4.1). We want to upgrade Lotus Domino from R 6.5 to -> R8.5.1
Our Questions:
1. Which SMSDOM version should we use for Lotus Domino 8.5.1?
2. If we also upgrade to new machine with bigger performance, How to do this? what step should we do?
note: we use 1 domino server to run live update for update virus definition, and replicate the virus definition to other servers
platform Windows 2003 R2, 32 bit
Thank you for your support

Mail Secuirty for Domino

Mail Secuirty for Domino 7.5.6 and later as well as Mail Secuirty for Domino 8.0.2 work on Domino 8.5.1 (32bit only at this time, the 64bit compatible version should be available soon. )

Uninstall Mail Security for Domino 4.1.
Do any machine migrations and/or upgrades to Domino and veryify Domino is working as expected.
Reinstall Mail Security for Domino.
Reconfigure Mail Secuirty for Domino.

Mail Secuirty for Domino.

Hi,

Lotus Domino 8.5.1 is not supported by any SMS DOMINO version released. It is not supported by 7.5 or 8.0.2.

Lotus Domino Server version 8.5.1 will be supported by the new SMS DOM 8.0.5 which will be relased soon. Please refer to:

Is Domino 8.x supported by Symantec Mail Security for Domino?

How upgrade SMSDOM for Domino

Thanks for your answer, but i need some explanation then
Inform me when my thought is wrong,

I assume that upgrading servers is not in one time, instead we upgrade 2 servers every week, which server we should upgrade first? the SMSDOM with live update or other server?

The condition server in upgrading progress will be like this:
2 servers domino 8.5 and SMSDOM 7.5.6. and the rest 7 servers Domino 6.5 with SMSDOM 4.1

is it right?

We do not have a

We do not have a recommendation for order of the servers to be upgraded as Mail Secuirty it self is not aware of replication or other servers or versions of mail secuirty in the enviroment.

However when upgrading multiple servers and you are replicating the mail secuirty databases and virus definitions between servers we recommened turning off replication for those databases until the servers are on the same version of the software. It is not recommened to replicate settings between different versions of SMSDom.

Uninstallation is done via

Uninstallation is done via add/remove programs.

Upgrading can be done inplace with out an uninstallation.

Mail Security for Domino 8.0 requires JRE 1.6 and the JCE be installed for Java LiveUpdate to be able to download new defintions.  If you are running SAV CE / SEP on the machines with SMSDom 8.0 it will use the same defintions as the AV client software, thus not needing to run LiveUpdate for SMSDom.

You will need to uninstall

You will need to uninstall SMSdom prior to moving the domino installation. The SMSDom installation has files outside of the domino data and program structure, which when moved with out uninstalling typically prevents Domino from loading as not all of the components needed by SMSDom are available.

The unisntallation will prompt if you want to keep or delete the files in the SAV folder. You can leave the sav folder and files durring the uninstallation and and move them to the new server to keep your settings.

Once domino is configured and functioning again on the new server you can reinstall SMSDom and it will use the databases you saved before.

Thank BenDC for clear

Thank BenDC for clear answer,

Is it possible to move to new machine / server without uninstall SMSDOM? Therefore the old machine is a fully function of Lotus and SMSDOM. The old machine will be a backup if urgent thing happen when upgrading.

Yesterday i tested upgrading without uninstall SMSDOM first, but the Domino will be crashed when i load ntask "load ntask". The some error were: Server PANIC, and Shared memory used.
I didn't move the C:/Program Files/Symantec/SMSDOM. is it right?
To solve it, i deleted the SAV folder, it run succeed. The SAV created any SAV databases itself

Do you know the support phone number? i will need when i run the upgrading next month.

Thank you

The installation instructions

The installation instructions are included with the download of the JCE.
It is just replacing two jar files in your java installation.
