Howto Troubleshoot the E-Mail Notification

Hello all,

we got an Exchange 2010 and a Backup Exec 2012 Server.

It does not work to send Notifications via the Exchange-Server. The problem seems to be a Backup Exec related issue. There are no incoming Mails from the Backup Exec Server. 

I have already tested the connection between BE and Ex-Server via telnet. It's working fine.

Any solution to troubleshoot the E-Mail Notifications?

  1. Ensure email notifications and settings (like servername, email address, etc) are properly configured.
  2. Let SGmon.exe run in the background with the following options checked:
    - Backup Exec Job Enginer, RAWS......
    - Backup Exec Server
  3. Run a small test job with SMPT Notificaiton configured OR Attempt to send a test notification
  4. Once the job/operation completes, check if you received the notification email
  5. If no email received examing the SGMon log and search for "Notify Return Code"
  6. If there is a hex code present, search for a related solution in SymWISE (Symantecs Knowledge Base)

Bhavik, thanks a lot.

With SGmon.exe i can work out my problem.

It was a problem due to the relay restriction in Exchange 2010.

A thing which is often mentioned.
