HowTo: Use Patch Management in existing DFS-R multi-sites network
Created: 01 Nov 2011 | 3 comments
For a structure using Altiris CMS 7.1, with Patch Solution 7.1 sp1, now great patching solution:
If Software package distribution already working onto a DFS-R external storage. Of course, we deactivate the http option to force using only SMB for NS agents.
Can I reuse the DFS-R to replicate all the patchs local sites, without needing to install "package servers" ?
How ?

Patch on DFS not using NS package servers... Not possible?
Deactivating the http is not enough, this impact the package servers, not the Altiris server hinself: So Nsagent still download from NS server in http: must install a Package server to avoid using package server in existing DFS... :(
Well, not able to use existing DFS for patching multiple sites... :(

Package Server on SMP
Deploy Package services on the SMP server ...Should work
Never activate Package services
Hi Laurent, thanks but never install the package service on a SMP 7.x platform. That is already a "hidden" package server. If you do that, you duplicate all the existing stored data on the SMP server himself... I already create a Symantec ticket because I do that on 1st install: confirmed a bad Idea.
My problem is how can we reuse existing DFS-R structure to replicate multiple sites the "Patchs" repository along WW multiple sites, instead of using the Package services (that is by design). we would like some customer site, already DFS for package deployment, avoid the altiris package services activation & deployment for patch only.
Bonne semaine :)
