HP Thin client and Altiris Deployment Solution

Created: 22 Apr 2010 • Updated: 30 Oct 2010 | 2 comments

We're looking to introduce HP thin clients to our network and require a cost-effective tool for management and deployment purposes. Initally we considered the HP t5730 model as the HP website clearly state it comes with a full Altiris client license and also mentioned the Altiris Deployment Solution is a free download. We've recently discovered the t5730 is end of life and has been replaced by the t5740, however, this model does not include the Altiris client license according to the HP website!

I've spent hours searching the net and on the phone to HP and their distributors but nobody seems to be able to help. Can anyone shed any light on what is required in terms of licensing. We simply want to add HP XPE thin clients to our network and use Altiris to manage and deploy images.

- Do we require an Altiris license for each HP thin client, if so how/where can we purchase these?
- Is the Altiris Deployment Solution the correct tool for our requirements and is it free to download?

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

- You need a license for every device you manage.  If not included with your hardware you need to buy it from your software reseller.
- DS is perfect but only free for the evaluation period.  You buy Ds with a license for xxx clients.  Clients do not store the license, this is managed at the server level.  You should take extended maintenance for futurue updates (some are on their way I think I can add safely) and support.  When you are going out of license, DS tells you and you have a grace period.  You can buy additional licences and add them.

Some advice (not asked for but never the less):  it is a great product.  You can learn it on your own but that will take a lot of time and effort.  Going into class for 5 days DOES PAY OFF!!!!  Also some consultancy would not hurt.

Hope it helped

Good luck and enjoy DS!!!
