HP Thin Clients & Licensing Issue
Created: 10 Jan 2008 | Updated: 21 May 2010 | 11 comments
Hi guys
Has anyone else had the issue where you can't apply a regular license to a HP thin client, by the documentation it says right click on the terminal, then go to advance and click on apply regular license.
Judging by the rest of the documentation it should then show up in the license node area, when you hit help then about.
At the moment I don't know whether our stuff is license properly or not....
Everything else like imaging etc works fine, no probs at all...
If someone could shed some light on this then great...
Cheers

I believe the HP Thin Clients will not show. By default it's automatically supported under an agreement with Altiris and HP. So, really the HP Thin Clients don't use a live active license
that's what I keep hearing as well, but when u checke on the DS itself there is an experation date. ( nothing happens when it expires) it makes me wonder even though the nodes are free do we have to pay for the DS ?
HP (the company) has paid for the license. You bought the right to use that license when you purchased the Thin Client from HP. Enjoy.
My DS liscnece is sayign that it's expired and I just ignore it. I'm just cureous if there's a way to change that ...
Can I put a question to you guys then.
I am correct in thinking that, where someone wants to support only HP T5530 Thin Clients through Altiris, one would only incur a server license fee.
The full version of DS agent is already installed on the terminal.
That's that main reason I even looked @ DS to for my thins , I don't have any needs to use it for other Hardware for now.
I was shooping to see different license but they are all bundled and I don't want that ... I think shansen is right ... you bought thins from HP and as long as you don't use it for PCs you don't need anything ...
No one at Symantec seems to want to let me know.
well my phylosophy is : if they don't want your money don't be in the rush to give it
Looks like you can use them:

The DS System does not have a license. If you're looking under help > about the licensing information is for purchased licenses, so if you're only using free licenses for your HP thin clients it will always show the licensing information as expired. Doesn't really look great if you're using the thin clients, but it's really nice as a user with many fat clients to be able to go to help > about and see how much longer I have on my licenses before I need to renew them.
You don't pay for the DS, only the client licenses.
Hope that clears up some confusion,

perfectly , Thanks alot.
got another question: thinking of adding fat clients, I started checking out prices, but there' s a load of possabilities ...
