HP6730b compatibility questions

We recently purchased a few 6730b notebooks. And Ghost v8 doesn't seem to be able to operate correctly. When we try and use a boot disk to start a ghost cast session, it hangs on NetBind 2.1.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this new version of ghost, and if it will work with this laptop. And for that matter work with our older ghost images. As well as work with Windows XP and 2000.

Thanks for the info.

You can try it out by downloading a trialversion at www.ghost.com. Or if you tell me what network card it uses I can see if the drivers are in it. As far as old ghost images, I can restore images made by ghost v8.3 just fine with 11.5.

There are a bunch of new things with GSS 2.5 that you will wonder how you ever did without, I suggest looking into it. And don't be afraid of WinPE boot disks/VP's.

Thank you for the information. It seems to work just fine. Now if someone could help me figure out the whole liscensing deal. Does 5 liscenses mean 5 copy's of the ghost console I can install? Or does it mean I can only ghost 5 machines? I'm assuming it means 5 copies of the console.

If you search on here there is a discussion about this about a month ago.

If I remember right, you can have an unlimited number of consoles (but recomended 1 console for every 2000 clients). The number is for the number of Ghost Clients you can install.

As far as if you are able to only ghost (useing a ghost disk) 5 clients I am not sure. There is also a phone number under user support (iscense questions) you can call and ask.

Just a question as we also were testing the 6730's (as they are the replacements for the 6710 models that we currently have) and i had the same issue on the netbind.

the question i have is why must we upgrade? can anyone say what is causing version 8.1x to Not be able to bind? as the 6710 work fine with version 8.1x.

just curious, as we had to jump to 8.1 for this very reason not to long ago, and now we have to jump again, just seems very odd.

Ghost 8.1 did come out in 2004, there have been numerous upgrades since then plus GSS 3.0 expected in about a year.

All I can say is try to make sure you have the most up to date drivers. I would also try the trial version of Ghost 2.5 to see if it's a problem with your laptops.

Also on these forums, there are blue posts talking about how DOS drivers wont work with some new computers because the BIOS doesn't support it or something like that. Please don't quote me, just better to do a search.

Don't bother using the dos boot method. Thats where the 6730b is having issues, it's something with the BIOS. I was able to create an image using the mini windows option. You create a bootable flash drive using the windows PE option on the ghost boot disk creator. And this will then load generic drivers via windows. Worked fine for me, I was even able to use ghost cast server 8.

And I have to be reading the information wrong. $40 per PC that I will be ghosting seems rather absurd.

we are using version 8.1x not 8.2

where in 8.1 is that option ?

i see in 8.2 there is an option for ISO. i will try that and see what happens.

No, its not in 8.1 or 8.2. I was only able to do that via the trial version of GSS.

Around $40 is correct, we have over 1000 so we got a bit of a discount I think.

You need to call Symantec about what the license buys though. When you use the Ghost Console with the client, thats where the price is worth it.

If you just want to use Ghost 11.5, I would think (I don't know) you just buy the program and your good.

But while you have the trial version, install the console on one computer and the client on another and see what it can do. Check out the cloning, image creation, deployanywhere, AI packages, configuration tools and all that. For us we rarely use CD's/DVD's anymore, so the price is worth it with this many computers and multiple off site operations.
