  • 1.  Huge problems with SEP (MR4 MP1a and MP2) clients and remote offices

We’re experiencing huge problems with primarily our remote offices over WAN and running Symantec Endpoint Protection v11.0.4202 MR4 MP2 clients full managed installation. But it also affects sites with local management servers, just not as often as with remote offices without a management server.

What happens is that when a XP SP2 (Swedish) client logs on to our domain* everything boots up normally. We execute IE6 with GPO’s at login to show our Intranet – and aproximatly 30 seconds after you entered your credentials on the computer and pressed enter, the computer TOTALLY locks up. The only thing still working is the mouse pointer, the network does not respond to ICMP trafic, you are not able to press CTRL-ALT-DEL or anything and you see the harddrive led blinking in a steady interval. The only thing to remedy this situation os to press and hold the power button to turn the computer off.

If you are running WiFi on a HP laptop you have the option to disable the WiFi power and login using cached credentials. And if you turn the power to the WiFi back on after logon that helps sometimes – but not always. On a desktop computer you might have to restart the computer 5-6 times before you can login without the computer locking up.

When you are logging off from the domain also generates similar problems about 50% of the time in the form of the computer hanging in similar ways during the “logoff script” process. This is not as severe as you can always turn the computer of, but still very anoying!

We had a consultant here from a Swedish company called Safeside Solutions AB to look though our management server setup. And everyhing looked ok from a setup standpoint, but unfortunentally he did not find a solution to this problem. But what he did find was that MP1 had a known problem with applications running UNC paths in a loginscript that could generate this kind of problem. But that should have been remedeed in MP1a. But no luck there either – not even with MP2.

When you are looking in the windows logfiles or SEP logfiles does not show anything out of intrest on the clients.

This problem is huge for us. We are running aproximatly 550 clients with SEP MR4 MP1a and a few with MP2. Case is also registered (320-201-162) - but all input is appreciated!

*We are running a W2003 R2 DC that runs Kix32 4.61 beta 1 (tried the old 4.60 version too) for login script handeling through a GPO.

    Hi Micheal

Never faced such problem but after reading the entire problem i guess you should have a look in Microsoft Technet or make a support call to them first and if from their end everything is prefect u can log a case in Symantec TechSupport  for the better solution.

    Ok..

Sounds wierd. Because the problem is only showing up when you are using network thread protection as far as we have noticed. I have logged a case with Symantec support under our support agreement. But if there is more ways to get quicker support in this case I'll take it!

Also, if you are having issues with Logoff and Login, might be related to the system itself.
Have you tried installing the: Windows Profile Hive Cleanup Service?
